German import Wellness Classics is a musical spa in a box, providing 10 relaxation CDs of classical and jazz music, a booklet with tips to reduce stress and to seek inner and outer health, and a sample bottle of SebaMed lotion. While the presentation may seem like an overly elaborate gimmick to plug this skincare product, the musical choices are actually quite good, drawn as they are from the backlists of Sony and BMG. Tracks feature such famous conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Michael Tilson Thomas, Fritz Reiner, Arthur Fiedler, Zubin Mehta, John Eliot Gardiner, Eugene Ormandy, and David Zinman, as well as celebrated soloists, including violinist Joshua Bell, pianist Emanuel Ax, guitarist Julian Bream, flutist James Galway, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Philippe Entremont, and jazz artists Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, and Oscar Peterson, among myriad other musicians. The sound quality of this survey is remarkably even and balanced, considering the wide range of recording dates and the great variety of recording venues. A single listener may find this collection to be more than enough music for home playback, but a package of this size seems better suited for use in a health clinic, where rotation play of several discs over the course of a day may be most practical.
