Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
Three kids decide to go on a leaf hunt to find colorful leaves. They first climb a mountain and find a maple tree. A rhyming verse about finding the leaves is repeated throughout the story. Onomatopoeia and alliteration are used throughout, creating lively and rhythmic prose. They go through a forest and find a birch tree, then around a waterfall to find a hickory tree, and then row across a lake to find a red oak tree. They encounter a skunk and go back across the lake, around the waterfall, back through the forest and mountain until they are home. The illustrations are pleasant and softy colorful, but they only show the trees without a good close-up of each leaf. Children should enjoy the repeated rhyme and reading along with the sounds such as the "step, step, squish, squash," and the "slip, slide, splish, splash." Reviewer: Vicki Foote
