Overview

The generation of Catholics who have come of age since Vatican II is different in many respects from Catholics of their parents' generation. These younger Catholics have grown up in a world - and a Church - which has changed tremendously in a very short period of time. They were raised in a society which encouraged them to question what their parents accepted on faith. They were formed by a system of religious education which was in many ways struggling to keep up with rapid social change.

John Paul II is a pope for these times. He recognizes that today's young people have many questions. He sees emerging in them a deep and sincere faith struggling for definition and for support. In response, he has designated a special, bi-annual event - World Youth Day, where he comes to youth to bring the truth and the love of the Roman Catholic Church.

In this book, Mary Beth Bonacci joins with John Paul II in bringing young Catholics a clearer understanding of the Church and their role in it. She takes his quotes from the five World Youth Day events and "unpacks" them, explaining the truths of the faith clearly and concisely. This book is perfect for the Catholics of "Generation X" - and for Catholic "youth" of any age who wish to understand and to deepen their faith.

Mary Beth Bonacci¿s, We¿re On A Mission From God, is a brilliant book. The book itself is like a reference guide for young Catholics, who are struggling with their faith. Bonacci gives answers and advice to these people hoping that they will receive a better understanding of their purpose in life. Bonacci also refers to Pope John Paul II¿s teachings to help the youth discover the truth about God and what he wants from them. And that is their respect and trust. The main topics that the Catholic youth seems to be struggling with these days are love: relationships and sex, commitment: to the Church and God and understanding: their purpose in life and the rules they must follow to get to Heaven. A quote that Bonacci uses almost entirely throughout the book, stated by Pope John Paul II, is that we should ¿¿live life abundantly.¿ This means that we should live life to its fullest and not waste it away with things like drugs, sex and alcohol. God wants us to come to him with pure hearts. Bonacci believes that the only way to get to Heaven is by ¿¿following the rules,¿ the rules that God set in stone when he came to Moses on the hill. Will these young Catholics step up to the plate and fight for their God? Will they conquer their fears and triumph over the devil as he tempts them to turn away from Heaven and join him in Hell? Only time will tell, while each generation continues on.

'We're On A Mission From God', is one of the most inspiring books I have read. I am a teen from the Generation X who, at first, had my doubts about my faith, and doubts about God. I barely went to church and definately didn't pray everyday. I was assigned this book to read for my school's summer reading. I thought this book would be just another book to get through and then stuff it in the back of closet and never think about it again. Instead the book made me have a positive outlook on life. It gave me a better understanding about the Catholic Church and about how I should live my life. It renewed my faith and gave me hope for the future. I strongly recommend this book to teenagers, and adults, who don't have a strong relationship with God and who don't realy understand their faith. This book has changed my life, and it can change your's too.
