Overview

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Beasts (RSPCB) operates a rescue center for werewolves, dragons, fairies, giants, sea monsters, and other fantastical creatures. The RSPCB has stopped crimes against beasts, but there are still some people out there who will do anything to get their hands on one of these mythic animals . . . even if that means crossing the members of the RSPCB. In the first book, Werewolf versus Dragon, a dragon’s mangled body arrives at the RSPCB, and the Society knows that they’ve got a real monster on their hands. Ulf, a werewolf-boy, and his friends must stop the most evil beast hunter before it’s too late. The adventure continues in the second book, Sea Monsters and Other Delicacies, for Ulf and his friends, Orson the giant, Tiana the Fairy, and Dr. Fielding. A sea monster has suffered a life-threatening injury, and it looks like the evil Baron Marackai is back—and this time beasts are on the menu. Ulf must stop him again—the future of the RSPCB depends on it.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Beasts houses just about every endangered species of imaginative creature ever envisioned: dragons, werewolves, giants, fairies, trolls, phoenixes, bulltoxics (and crocoons and wartolumps), griffins, rocs, flesh-eating plants, rock-eating beasts, seven-headed hydras, flaming squid, mermaids, boogles, gorgons, and more. But now it is jeopardized by a nefarious plot to force a captured dragon, mourning her slain baby, into a barbaric duel in the Ring of Horrors—unless young werewolf Ulf and his fairy companion Tiana can manage somehow to save the day. This is a title calculated to please reluctant readers, with its large typeface set against abundant white space and its frequent illustrations. The story itself seems calculated to appeal to readers who relish gore (e.g., a viscerally described dragon autopsy complete with spilled guts, sticky membranes, and oozing blood), and violence: even as Ulf hastens to prevent the sadistic Ring of Horrors, readers are encouraged to read faster in anticipation of its promised hideousness. Not for everyone, but sure to be popular with those who like their fiction grotesque and gory. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
School Library Journal
Gr 4–7—Ulf is a young werewolf who lives on the vast properties of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Beasts. He is under the mentoring eye of Dr. Helen Fielding, a crypto-veterinarian—in other words, a vet who cares for unusual beasts such as dragons and yetis. His enemy, and the enemy of all who support the RSPCB, is Baron Marackai, a thoroughly and stereotypically despicable villain who delights in kidnapping and killing such creatures. In Werewolf, Marackai murders a baby dragon and sets his sights on the baby's mother, and Ulf and Dr. Fielding go on guard—but when and how will the Baron attack? The authors set up an interesting situation, but then sat back and simply connected the dots. In Sea Monsters, Ulf is alarmed when a sea captain tows in a gigantic, octopuslike monster with a venomous stinger. The injured Redback lurks in her tank, foul-tempered and ready to strike at anyone who tries to help her. Ulf researches the animal, and, with the help of his fairy friend Tiana, learns how to help it. Dr. Fielding strongly advises against it, but Ulf, in secret, is determined to try. It soon becomes apparent, however, that Baron Marackai wants Ulf to cure the Redback for nefarious reasons of his own. This volume is very much like the first, including the shallow characters and predictable plot. The idea behind the series—a nature preserve for fantastic beasts—is intriguing, but it is not well carried out.—Walter Minkel, Austin Public Library, TX

    Werewolf vs Dragon rocks

I purchased this book for my 4th grader and he loved it. He has since got a nook and is going into the 6th grade. He was searching for books to read over summer vacation and he found the other 2 books about this adorable little werewolf boy named ULF and he had to have them. They were quick reads for him but he still loved them and is hopeful the the RSPCB and ULF will have many more adventures.

WEREWOLF VERSUS DRAGON starts off with Ulf and Dr. Fielding watching a radar screen at the RSPCB (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Beasts). On the screen, they see two blips, which Dr. Fielding explains are dragons. The mother and baby dragon are migrating further north and passing over the RSPCB.

Later though, Dr. Fielding and Orson the giant retrieve the body of the baby dragon. It was found dead and Dr. Fielding is determined to discover what caused it to die. Little does anyone at the RSPCB realize that someone called the Baron had his minions do what they could to shoot the dragons out of the sky. However, the evil Baron doesn't want the mother dragon dead...he has other plans for the huge beast.

Dr. Fielding reports the dragon attack to the National and International Criminal Emergencies (yes, aka NICE). Soon, an inspector shows up. The inspector hints that the dragon attacker may have plans to hurt the beasts at RSPCAB, and Dr. Fielding, Ulf, and Orson secure the grounds. But there's something not quite right with the inspector, and the story grows more twisted once Inspector Black appears.

WEREWOLF VERSUS DRAGON introduces the reader to Ulf, Dr. Fielding, Orson, the RSPCB and scary Marackai. The story is a quick read, and boys will certainly be drawn to this AN AWFULLY BEASTLY BUSINESS series. With many mythical beasts and crazy villains, the action and adventure will surely be appealing. Marackai calls to mind the villainous Count Olaf and the crazy schemes that he gets up to.

For more adventures with the RSPCB against Marackai, check out SEA MONSTERS AND OTHER DELICACIES.
