Overview

It's not so easy being young, gay, and in love for the first time at the average high school. Senior Toren Grey cares more about his family and his grades than what brand of clothes he wears. He agrees with the majority consensus that he's a nerd. So he's quite surprised when resident bad boy Wesley Carroll speaks to him in the hall, stirring feelings that Toren has to hide.

Disconcerted by Wes's free and easy ways, Toren can't deny the attraction between them. As he relaxes and gets to know Wes better, he finds there's more to the sexy rebel than his public image. Before long the young men are exploring new territory and falling in love, but life just isn't that simple. After they graduate, obstacles block their relationship at every turn: Wes working versus Toren in college, the virulent disapproval of parents, and everyday trials faced by any struggling young couple. Wes and Toren have to believe in each other... and never doubt that their love can conquer all.

Touching Bad-boy Meets Angel Love Story

Wes & Toren is a touching, young-adult gay romance. Set in the present day and told in the first-person narrative by Toren, a shy and studious gay teen, the story chronicles the budding romance and eventual long-term relationship of and endearing teen couple.

Using the classic badboy-meets-angel format, the author portrays Wesley as a rough-around-the-edges street kid who falls hard for his bookwormish classmate Toren. Wes pursues him with a vengeance and of course Toren is ultimately swept off his feet. Initially both are closeted but gradually reveal themselves to family, co-workers, and a circle of close friends. The plot presents a series of challenges faced by the young couple including primarily their struggle to gain acceptance and legitimacy in the eyes of Wesley's family.

The story was well-written and realistically presented, and I found myself growing ever-more attached to the characters therein. Dialogue was believable, and the narrative itself was an easy read. Although using the first-person point of view can be limiting, the author craftily fleshed-out all of the story's central characters.

Towards the end of the book, the story was particulary heavy with graphic sex, frankly not to my liking. Although I do enjoy erotica, I'm not sure such depictions were necessary in this story. I was also a bit surprised and disappointed that Toren would compromise his standards and morals in terms of drug use. I'd hoped it would be the other way around, that Wesley would mature out of his pot-smoking habits.

Perhaps the most impressive characteristic of this story was the manner in which Wesley was presented not so much as a larger-than-life, knight in shining armor hero, but more realistically as the endearing, incredibly sexy boy next door. I liked that he was flawed in some ways, yet attractive on so many levels. His protectiveness of overly-sensitive Toren was very moving. At times I just wanted to reach right into the book and embrace Wesley. Amazing character!

Over all I'm thrilled to have read this book, and I look forward to future works by this author. It is was a worthwhile investment of my time, and I was glad to bring these two sweet boys into my life and heart for a few hours... and probably forever hereafter

    ...disappointing

FIRST: if your looking for a hard-core story or super drama, this is is not it. (i wish somebody told me)

it was too cheesy, there was a lot of blushing and not the good kind, more like "blush for any reason" blush.

i wish they showed wes' side of the story. Torren is ....not that interesting.

there are good parts, but not enough to make you feel satisfied about buying it...
