Overview

Guitarist Lee Ritenour says he first discovered the music of the great jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery when he was barely a teenager. Montgomery's music continued to be a major influence on Ritenour, who decided to pay homage to the late legend on his 1993 recording, WES BOUND. He gave the tribute album a new twist, however, by including both updated versions of Montgomery classics and his own originals that had been inspired by Montgomery's style. The most popular song on the album is actually not a Montgomery tune at all; it's a version of Bob Marley's "Waiting in Vain," featuring vocals by reggae star Maxi Priest. In the album's liner notes, Ritenour says of this song, "I had always liked the tune and had a feeling it might work as a Wes-type melody." Elsewhere on the album, the guitarist turns in imaginative, contemporary reworkings of Montgomery's "Boss City," "4 on 6," "Goin' on to Detroit," "Road Song," and "West Coast Blues." WES BOUND bridges the past and present with a highly satisfying recording that honors the work of a master without forfeiting Ritenour's own unique voice.
