Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
In a topographical style that eschews the sharply printed image or preconceived interpretive content, photographer and scholar Adams (Why People Photograph) here captivates with soft, moody, essentially repetitive views of an industrially endangered locale close to his heart-the Columbia River's confluence with the Pacific. One picture, of sand tracings and distant waders, tells a story, but for the most part we see sand, stones, sea grass, water and clouds in various stages of serenity and agitation. This is an excellent example of minimalist, non-art photography that will appeal to a considerable segment of the art-photography audience. Captions and notes on back pages identifying the picture subjects and their significance would have proved more useful to readers had they appeared in close proximity to the pertinent photos. (Nov.)
Library Journal
West from the Columbia is Adams's tenth Aperture book of photographic essays, following Listening to the River and Why People Photograph, both published in 1994. Sixty stunningly lyrical black-and-white tritone photographs of the Columbia River emptying into the Pacific are followed by brief captions and location notes. Adams's trademark high-contrast, harsh-light works are tempered here by incredible nuances of water, sand, light, and sky. In contrast to Adams's earlier works, human presence is scarcely acknowledged in this latest quest for and celebration of the area's natural forms, rhythms, and beauty. An elegant and evocative offering; highly recommended for academic libraries.-Russell T. Clement, Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville
Booknews
A collection of unremarkable b&w photos of water and sea from the vantage point of the Columbia River as it flows into the Pacific. The reproductions (or perhaps the original works) seem flat, despite the tritone separations indicated in the colophone. A brief preface and photo identification captions comprise the only text. 12.5x12.5" Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
