    I Also Recommend:

    Keep an open mind...

Definitely not the original, but after listening to it the third time it grew on me. I don't think the voices are as strong as the original production, but the Spanish language elements definitely lend an updated feel, although I wish they had alternated with English. If you don't speak Spanish, familiarize yourself with the words of those songs.
    The character Anita is outstanding!

    I Also Recommend:

    West Side Success!

In more recent productions of Sondheim's West Side Story, the show has lacked originality and that special factor that draws in audiences... until now. With its new Tony nominated Broadway revival, this musical has been selling out weekly due to its stellar cast, great music, and wonderful storyline. This particular album unites all those elements and a new originality to the show. Lin Manuel Miranda(In the Heights) translated the Sharks' numbers into Spanish dialect so the Puerto Rican elements become authentic (Tonight, I Feel Pretty, and A Boy Like That). Josefina Scaglione and Matt Cavenaugh play the lovers with huge voices that are current, strong, and filled with rich vibratos. Karen Olivo as Anita is the true standout though, with a Tony Award for her performance to prove it. Every emotion and note is brought to life on this recording alone.

The full orchestra, stunning cast, and fearless translations, this album is a must buy for any musical theatre fan. It also includes bonus karaoke tracks and other various songs. Hurry up and purchase this recording: You won't be sorry!

How a musical more than 50 years old still sounds so good

West Side Story lies at the intersection of genius (forgive the grammar):how can anything created by Bernstein, Sondheim and Robbins be anything less? Bernstein has crafted a symphony set to contemporary notes and rhthyms. Virtually every song is unforgettable. This album is not helped by a less than stellar Tony, but the other voices are exceptional and the arrangements are still the standard for which other musicals should be compared to, and most will fall short by a good margin.

Even though the score and talent is all there, it was a let down that it sounded like it could be the original, except for the few lyrics that were in Spanish, noting new was brought to the table. Skip it and keep on listening to the original B'Way Cast Recording.
