Sunset Western Garden Book

This is it! Most of the existing books on landscaping can be put into one of the three categories: a. Coffee table books with pretty photos. b. Encyclopedia of plants. c. Horticulture books. Only a few of the books on landscaping actually discuss design. 'Sunset Western Garden Book' is the best book for plant selection, a very important aspect of Planting Design. I have used it for many, many years. Every landscape architect that I know owns a copy of this book. Each new edition is getting better and better. 'Sunset Western Garden Book' is one of the best encyclopedia and is the 'Bible' of Western Gardening. As the author of 'Planting Design Illustrated,' I would not hesitate to recommend this book to garden lovers.

    Sunset Western Garden Book

Famous Landscape Architect Thomas Church once wrote: ' Landscaping is logical, down-to-earth and aimed at making your plot of ground produce what you want and need from it.' The original bestseller, 'Sunset Western Garden Book' is one of the best encyclopedias and is the 'Bible' of Western Gardening. I am very happy to read its companion, 'Sunset Western Landscaping Book.' This new addition to the Sunset family is a great attempt in covering the design aspect of landscaping. It covers topography, climate, lifestyle, plants, and environment. It starts with the purpose, design and planning of gardens, microclimates, seasons, soils, understanding of site, Western garden styles, the process from plan to reality, and gardens in different regions of the West. It continues to explore the use of various garden structures (arbors, decks, fences, fireplaces, gazebos, kitchens, paths, patios, steps, walls, etc) and garden plants (trees, shrubs, vines, perennials, annuals, bulbs, herbs, fruits and vegetables, ornamental grasses, wild flowers, and succulents, etc) in landscaping. It also discusses finishing touches (lighting, containers, birdhouses, garden art, water features, etc), regional problems and solutions, materials and techniques, and landscape plans. I like the color landscape plans in 'Sunset Western Landscaping Book.' I can tell Fiona Gilsenan and Kathleen Norris Brenzel and their team put in a lot of effort in creating and selecting the plans. They also have good, professionally trained eyes. The colors of the plans are harmonious and pleasant. They can be used as good samples for selecting colors for landscape presentation plans. 'Sunset Western Landscaping Book' has 416 pages and many color interior photographs. It is a fine companion to 'Sunset Western Garden Book' and a must-have for personal, professional, academic, and community library Gardening & Landscaping reference collections.

    A must for Gardeners !

I would have liked common names of plants first, as opposed to the Botanical name first.

    The Best

I was delighted to get so much infromation in one book and now I don't have to borrow my neighbors book any more. I love the cross references for handling problems, being able to learn the many names for one plant is very helpful, and color coding is great. It is so easy to use this book.

    I Also Recommend:

    Great Wealth of Knowledge

This is a really good source of plant information for any level of gardener. I used an earlier edition of this book regularly when I lived in Southern California, but now I live in Northwest Oregon and I bought this newer edition to learn about the different types of plants up here. I use this book everyday to look up new plants I come across in my job as a Parks maintenance worker.
This book also was a great help to me in my studies to become a Master Gardener.
I would recomend this book to anyone.

    A reviewer

Thousands of garden reference books have been written and thousands have been purchased. Most of that number served their lives on the owner's bookshelf due to limited use and appeal. The Western Sunset Garden Book is not one of these! This book stands apart in every way. Anyone who gardens, no matter where they live, will find this wonderful book indespensable. I can't say more...

Edition 7 and 8 = same excellent garden book

Excellent garden book. The bible for any gardener. A must have. Have graduated through the many editions and revisions, and except for the cover photo, find the 7th and 8th edition to be the same, and both 768 pages. I find no difference.
