This was a gift for my son but I always look first. All the basics... raised beds, hardening off seedlings and starting seeds, etc. plus an extensive encyclopedia of fruits and vegetables from everyday to exotic. This should save him a lot of problems and help him when I can't. I wish Sunset had this years ago.

New to gardening in the West, I find this book is a "must have." The "How to Grow It" section for each edible is invaluable, along with various insights regarding edible varieties. Not only veggies are included in this book but also herbs, berries, fruits, nuts, tropicals. Chapters on Garden Design and Practical Guide conclude this book, a valuable guide for gardener novices of edibles or those wanted to expand their edibles' garden in the West. Another winner from Sunset publishers!

I bought this book for my nephew who is 14 and was interested in starting his own vegetable garden. We are totally pleased. It is a very beautiful, detailed book full of pictures and detailed information. It is easy to read, yet has many gardening tips for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. The book details the preparation and planning of the garden, and illustrates many plants. It also gives insight to the suitability of the various plants to climate and recommendations for the care of the plants. Perfect for the beginner in the family. A good tool for getting the kids interested, and getting them outside!
