Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Patrick Hunter
Westward Ho! brings the western expansion of the country to life with graphic panels illustrating history from the Louisiana Purchase up through the gold and silver rush. The thirty or so pages are filled with two graphic panels per page. Each has a caption depicting the action of the particular part of history discussed, as well as word balloons from the characters to add some commentary to the scene. For example, in the panel that depicts American soldiers capturing Mexico City, the word balloon states, "We take this city in the name of the United States Government." About a third of the book is devoted to the acquisition of territory from Mexico: Texas independence and the War with Mexico. This helps to give a fuller picture of that part of American history. Mormons are also given an amazing amount of details given the limited space of the medium used. The declaration of faith and purpose by Joseph Smith, and the move to Illinois and eventually Utah, is all covered in the space of four panels. The final part of the book covers, briefly, the Gold Rush, ending with a panel that teases that "the time of the wild west was just beginning"; leaving you with the desire to read on. Appropriate since Westward, Ho! is part of the "Graphic America" series. A perfect book to use as a jumping off point for further study in any history class. It would also be useful in reading groups for those children who may be struggling with more conventional chapter books. Reviewer: Patrick Hunter
