Dazu wird zunächst als Hinführung eine kurze Inhaltsangabe gegeben, um anschließend verschiedene Aspekte aus der Erzählung aufzuführen, die zu einer Veränderung Paul Bereyters beitrugen. Hierfür ist es wichtig, mit Zitaten aus der Erzählung zu arbeiten und diese ggf. mit Hilfe von wissenschaftlicher Literatur zu interpretieren. Anschließend wird das zusammengefasste Ergebnis dargestellt. W.G. Sebalds 1992 veröffentlichte Prosa „Die Ausgewanderten" handelt von vier Personen, die ihre Heimat verließen. Der Titel „Die Ausgewanderten" ist die substantivierte Form des Partizip Perfekt von „auswandern". Diese Form wird im Allgemeinen verwendet, um zu beschreiben, dass ein Geschehen oder Sein vollendet ist, dass aber das Ergebnis noch andauert oder nachwirkt. Folgend daraus heißt es also, dass eine Auswanderung selbst noch andauert, auch wenn sie, wie im Falle Paul Bereyters, revidiert wurde. Genau um diesen Aspekt dreht sich W.G. Sebalds Werk: Um vier Ausgewanderte und ihre persönliche Lebensgeschichte, die vom Erzähler detailiert recherchiert und dokumentiert worden sind. Allen vier Protagonisten der Erzählungen ist gleich, dass ihre Immigration bis in die Gegenwart wirkt und einen inneren Prozess, oftmals den der gefühlten Heimatlosigkeit, auslöste, der vom Erzähler dargestellt wurde.
