Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
"Now we know that whale sharks are amazing animals!" Although the author reaches this conclusion for every species featured in the "Discover Sharks" series, I agree! Whale sharks are intriguing for different reasons than most sharks. They swim slowly, while most sharks swim fast. Whale sharks are not dangerous to humans; according to de la Bedoyere, they can even seem friendly at times. Also, while the whale shark is the biggest fish in the seas (as big as a bus), it eats some of the smallest animals that float or swim. Everything about a whale shark seems to indicate that it is adapted perfectly to its habitat. Dark blue-green with white spots with white stripes on their bellies, they are able to blend in when viewed from above or below. Gulping food is a specialty, since whale sharks can open their mouths wider than six feet and then send the seawater out of their gills. Kudos to the author and publisher for pointing out the sharks' remarkable nature instead of how "scary" they might seem. The book's text is easy to read, and colorful photo illustrations add to the lively format, although the contrast between the dark background and black lettering could be improved. As with the other books in the series, this includes a simple glossary. I noticed that this is the only book in the series that does not mention reproduction; is this an aspect yet to be discovered about these giant fish? Reviewer: Judy Crowder
