Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Kathy, a beluga whale at the New York Aquarium, isn't sleeping tonight. Instead, she hunts for items such as rocks or leaves that may have fallen into her tank. Why the careful housekeeping? The whale knows that if she presents a found object to her trainers in the morning, they will give her a fish as a reward for the "gift from Kathy." Here is an example to young readers of how intelligent whales are. This book, part of the "Smart Animals" series, uses color photo illustrations and clear, detailed drawings to explore the remarkable intelligence of toothed and baleen whales. Cetaceans are adept at hunting prey. Baleen whales can capture hundreds of pounds of fish or tiny krill by gulping schools and squeezing out the water. Humpbacks make circles of bubbles with their blowholes to "net" fish in the open ocean. Copying hunting behavior of other whales is a sure sign of intelligence. Some whales imitate sounds as well. Then there's teamwork: operating in pods (large groups) to hunt or avoid predators, plus spyhopping, or raising heads straight up when whales are curious. While scientists have learned a lot about whale reproduction and hunting behavior, the book points out that researchers still have a lot to learn. Why do whales breach (rise out of the water and splash down)? Why do whales sing? Whales is packed with whale information both in the text and in the "bubbles" of information on most pages as well as glossary, bibliography, online sites and "Just the Facts" statistics.
