Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
In a starred review, PW said that this mini-history of whales and whaling is "meticulous in all respects. Evocative [woodcut] illustrations call to mind scrimshaw pieces on a larger scale." Ages 7-10. (Mar.)
Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
Powerful woodcuts vivify a gripping history of whaling from the first scavenging of beached beasts through the heyday of whaling fleets and the invention of the harpoon cannon to the contemporary, almost universal ban on its practice. 1996 (orig.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-- Dynamic tinted woodcuts visually reinforce the strength of this slim, readable history that emphasizes the golden days of Yankee whalers. Carrick begins with 12th-century Basque whaling, but quickly moves to the hunters--Native Americans and colonists--of the New England coast. She includes a dramatic re-enactment of a successful harpooning, a description of the flensing and trying-out of the resultant carcass, and a look at the hard life aboard a vessel as she follows the growth of the whaling industry. A brief look at modern whaling methods serves as a basis for a plea for the preservation of these hard-pressed leviathans. A well-designed, carefully crafted package. --Patricia Manning, Eastchester Public Library, NY
Carolyn Phelan
Dedicated to the Greenpeace Whale Campaign, this handsome book describes the history of whaling from ancient times, when people ate beached whales, through the development of whaling expeditions, up to the invention of exploding harpoons and the present ban on whaling. However, the book focuses mainly on New England whaling up to the mid-1800s, detailing the structure of the ships and the lives of the crews as well as the killing and processing of whales and the economic products that kept the industry vital for so many years. Even when discussing countries that ignore the ban on further hunting of species that have been hunted nearly to extinction, Carrick's tone remains matter-of-fact. She explains the way things are and lets readers draw their own conclusions. Frampton's strong woodcuts, tinted with muted tones of tan and blue, give the book a period look and a sense of drama. An informative and visually striking picture book for older children.
