Wow. A romance book with a plot. How unique. After the junk that hit the market after the 50 Shades book, I was happily surprised to read a book written with some skill. This is a funny story too. Lots of laughs. Great plot.

From the moment I started reading - with a quote from Mae West no less - I knew I was in for an exciting ride. Author Selena Robins combines all of the necessary components to create a solid romance - clever humor, believable characters, a lush and vivid backdrop, and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. The result is a book that grips your heart and doesn't let go. When you're not chuckling with glee or squirming in your seat, you'll be clutching at your chest and hoping that your heart doesn't break.
I identified with the heroine, Maddie, on many levels. She's a woman who knows what she wants, yet, remains tainted by events in her past which continue to shadow her life. When she decides to woo her sexy best friend, Alex, on a job in a tropical paradise, it's sweet, endearing, and hilarious. He, too, is someone you'll love, and because of their chemistry the dialogue is not only real but manages to steal the show time and again.
While there are twists and turns in the plot involving Maddie, her assignment, and her questionable family history, it is the flourishing relationship between her and Alex that shines bright. I loved observing the journey as they decided to take the jump from friends to lovers, fought past petty doubts and events that threaten to tear them apart, and eventually came together as the pair they were always intended in being. Of course, no story would be complete without a lot of emotional tension, and you can expect plenty of that as well, courtesy of subplots that offer a whole lot more than you might expect.
The writing is excellent, and the pace is perfect for a work of this length. Ms. Robins has done a wonderful job of creating a book that will engage you from start to finish, with a hero and heroine that you can't help but cheer for. I thoroughly enjoyed What a Girl Wants and recommend this book to anyone who loves romance with clever dialogue and characters that sneak their way into your heart and make it impossible for you to forget them. I'll definitely be on the lookout for more works from this author in the future.

I love Selena's sense of humor and it comes out from the very first chapter in WHAT A GIRL WANTS. The characters she creates are
plausible and make you think they're real people. Maddie is smart and funny, but more than that, she is a well-rounded person with a
goal we can relate with - not just to "get the guy." But when she does cook up a plan to seduce Alex, her long-time friend, I wanted to
root for her.
Selena is an excellent writer and it shines through on every chapter. I admire her ability to keep the story tension high without making
it feel contrived. She has written a book that will engage you, make you laugh, and pull at your heart. By the end, you will be convinced
that Alex and Maddie are folks that could walk through the door any moment, back from Hawaii, and tell you their story.
Besides. There's chocolate. And that, my friends, is WHAT A GIRL WANTS.

I'm a sucker for friends to lovers stories. What a Girl Wants quenched that thirst for a believable tale of blossoming romance between friends. Selena Robins masterfully peppered in humor throughout the story that added to the enjoyment and the discomfort and awkwardness was spot on. I could easily see myself in the role of Maddie Saunders (if I were only so brazen). If you enjoy a story fraught with humor and believable romance, this is a must add to your read list.

Poor Alex! Tropical paradise, exotic cocktails, and a beautiful coworker hell-bent on having her wicked way with him. Should be every man’s not-so-secret fantasy come true. Except he likes Maddie, and doesn’t want to hurt her—and having a fling with the boss’s niece isn’t a great career move. But Maddie’s not looking for a relationship—she just wants to have some fun.
This started out as a light, playful book, full of witty banter and heavy on the sexual innuendo. Great setting and red-hot chemistry. Wonderful escapism reading.
But I’m an impatient reader, and I usually read darker, weightier romances. Selena Robins is sneaky, folks—she hooks you in with the fun and flirt, and THEN gets to the heart and soul of her characters. There is plenty here for a drama-lover like me. A fatherless heroine with abandonment issues, conflicted heroes with secrets…even an evil blackmailer playing everyone like an evil puppeteer. The second half of the book was right up my alley, as Alex works to get under Maddie’s mask to the real woman within.
Masks have always fascinated me—what people show to the world vs. what they keep hidden inside, and the level of trust needed to share what’s inside with another. And a hero who can call a heroine’s bluff and bring out the real woman—that’s MY kind of guy!
The only weird thing was a bizzaro technical issue with my beloved Kindle. For whatever reason, it kept replacing periods (.) in the story with three-quarter marks (3/4)—literally. Never had that happen before. Anyone else’s Kindle do an independent free-form act like that? Because at first it was distracting, and then once I got into the story, I quit seeing them. But I just went back and checked—they’re still there. I think my Kindle is possessed…
Definitely pick up this book—it’s a great read for everyone at either end of the spectrum. Not too many books can say that.

When I was in Middle School and High School I had a male best friend that I had feelings for. My GuyPal stayed a pal and we never had a romance. I loved the premise of this book, mostly because I could identify with it so well.
Maddie is an adventure and chocolate junkie, and she has the best job. She writes about her adventures for her uncle’s magazine. She is about to leave for a trip to a Hawaiian island for a few weeks of research for an article. She is shopping for a few more essentials for her trip. Namely a curve hugging little black dress that will aid her in attaining her most exciting adventure of all; convincing the other journalist on this trip to spend this trip in each other’s arms. Alex is her best friend and fellow journalist. They have been buddies for a long time. His going on this trip is to conduct an interview with the elusive Maxwell Hollister. Alex has feelings for Maddie also, feelings he is keeping to himself; as he would rather keep their friendship than have a short fling. He keeps to this ideal through all of Maddie’s attempts to convince him otherwise, and it is when she gave up and goes dancing with another man that Alex loses his internal struggle. And the love they find is more amazing than they imagined.
Their journey to Happily Ever After (HEA) would be a fantastic read alone for the beautiful location and delightful characters. This wonderful book also has a wonderful subplot of Maddie’s personal journey to find out who she is biologically. Maddie never knew her father, and she has hired a private investigator to help her get the answers she has always wanted but her mother has never been willing to provide. Of course neither the journey to HEA or to find her father could be complete without a few funny happenings along the way. Selena Robins can sure write romantic comedy.
I won this book from the blog Kindles & Wine. I was so excited as it was on my To Be Purchased to Read list. I enjoy Selena’s whit and quirky characters. I look forward to visiting with more of them in the future!
