Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Peg Glisson
A school situation where students' rights were severely curtailed is effectively used throughout the text as an analogy to help youngsters grasp the importance of our Constitution's guarantee of basic rights. The text explores the Bill of Rights and its contents as well as the evolution of voting rights, the rights of those accused of a crime, and our responsibilities as citizens protected by those rights, particularly those voting and serving in the military and on juries. The clean font, color photos, and well-placed, informative photos and sidebars (including one on attempts to ban books) help draw in the reader. Charts and diagrams also facilitate understanding. Part of Gareth Stevens' "My American Government" series, the book includes an excellent glossary and index as well as well-chosen, age-appropriate books and web sites for further information. A good amount of information is packed into this slim book, making it a good choice for those ready for more than mere basics. Reviewer: Peg Glisson
