Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Stella's younger brother returns for a third adventure, What Are You Doing, Sam? by Marie-Louise Gay. The redheaded big sister asks the title question, and readers witness Sam's delightful responses, whether he is snorkeling in the tub with his dog or playing hide-and-seek with the pooch. Children's Literature - Barbara Youngblood
A small boy and his dog do many fun and crazy things together, while observed by an older sister. In the bathtub, Sam discovers that Fred, the dog, already knows how to swim. Later, Fred is taught to read by Sam, and is the recipient of some delicious peanut butter banana pancakes. This darling book is wonderfully illustrated and tells the story with a bit of humor. Parents will definitely appreciate the humor of children telling you what they are doing and then seeing what they are really doing. The Canadian author has many other Stella and Sam books if you crave more. The book is suitable for early readers.
School Library Journal
PreS-K-Sam and his older sister are spending the day pursuing various entertainments. While Stella reads, paints, and works on craft projects, she keeps track of her brother's activities by asking periodically, "What are you doing, Sam?" The boy keeps busy with his dog, Fred, making him pancakes, playing hide-and-seek, and more. Stella looks in on Sam from time to time, but is never perturbed by the mess left in the wake of this small and very active child. The deceptively simple illustrations were created with a variety of materials: watercolor, HB pencil, colored pencils, collage, and acrylic ink. The smallest details add to the charm of the pictures: Sam walks around with only one sock on; he calls out his commands to a decidedly inert dog; and he borrows his grandmother's glasses to aid Fred in learning to read. Another charming tale about these siblings that will delight all who enter their cozy realm.--Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
