What Book: Buddha Poems from Beat to Hiphopby Gary Gach
Pub. Date: 06/01/1998
Publisher: Parallax Press
Five years in the making, What Book!?: Buddha Poems from Beat to Hiphop is a major, active anthology of modern, mindful poetry, featuring over 330 selections from over 125 authors. Plus the appendix includes "mind-writing slogans" and "mind-writing exercises" by Allen Ginsberg. The time is ripe for this anthology, serving as a landmark for both Buddhism and poetry, both actively available in the same gesture.
"Beat to Hiphop" is meant more as a measure of time than as target of any particular style. Major issues and themes include: love, nature, pacifism vs. violence, the avant garde, family, silence, and song.
Contents include original work and translations; performance art and conceptual art; lyrics, arias, and blues; picture poems and calligraphy; prose poetry; sonnets; haiku; meditations and sutras; journal entries; bucolics; jeremiads; postmodernism; and other artifacts from the intersection of meditation and art. Its tapestry of voices includes:
Illustrious (e.g., Peter Coyote, Maxine Hong Kingston, Yoko Ono, Czeslaw Milosz, Robinson Jeffers, Yusef Komunyakaa, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Laurie Anderson, John Cage, Thomas Merton, bell hooks, Stephen Mitchell, Jane Hirshfield) and lesser-known luminaries, plus brand-new discoveries; Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, Asian American, African American, Jewish American, Chicano, Polish, Estonian, Australian, etc.; veterans; Beat, pre-Beat, re-Beat, and hiphop; and children of all ages.
What Book!? has an online component: "WhatWeb?!", not a zine but a zone, featuring work not contained in the book including commentary and hyperlinks. http://word.to/whatweb.html
Such an undertaking would never have been possible from any of today's mainstream publishers. Parallax Press has recently published a selection of poems by Ko Un, South Korea's poet laureate, and Philip Whalen, a Beat alumni now abbot of a Zen center - as well as numerous books by Thich Nhat Hanh and titles relating to socially engaged Buddhism.
