Brilliant board books for toddlers based around the senses. Exploring the concept of taste, this title features familiar scenes and fun words to encourage lively chatter.
Children's Literature - Marilyn CourtotWhen one thinks of taste one is usually describing whether something is sweet, sour, salty, bitter, or possibly something new called Umami which has been recently recognized as the fifth taste. Young children have more taste buds and are more sensitive to taste than adults. However the focus of this board book is more on texture. Something like a banana is soft and fruity, bread is chewy, and cake is crumbly, while some vegetables sticks are crunchy. Spaghetti on the other hand is depicted as being swirly, twirly, and a bit of a tangled mess. The only real taste is sweetness which is emphasized in several of the illustrations. While the book is amusing especially the picture of the young toddler dripping his popsicle, it really does not focused on the sense of taste. This title is part of an engaging board book series about the senses. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
