Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This simple little lift-the-flap book is 7 ½ by 7 ½ inches and easy for small hands to hold. The colors are bright and cheerful; the cover is an eye-catching turquoise. Hachai is a publisher of books for American Jewish children and this one has several Hebrew phrases for very early youngsters to hear and learn. The first page is illustrated with a view from inside a bedroom, looking out a window onto a comfortable neighborhood with birds and trees and the sun coming up over the horizon. The words say, "The sun is shining brightly, the birds chirp in their tree. I thank Hashem each morning and say. . .(lift the flap). . .‘Modeh Ani.'" Four of the eight flaps in the book conceal English phrases and four are in Hebrew. The inside back cover has a glossary in English for the Hebrew words under the flaps. This would be a lovely gift for a young child of Jewish or of mixed heritage.
