Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book opens the wondrous and sometimes violent world of sharks to budding biologists. About 20 different species of sharks are realistically illustrated in their natural habitats and another 20 are discussed within the text in a question-and-answer format. Neither the authors nor illustrator attempt to gloss over the more savage attributes of the creatures they profile. One passage explains how and why some sharks eat their own young, while another describes the bloody feeding frenzy phenomenon. An illustration of a scientist dissecting a spiny dogfish includes the various internal organs of the creature. Some mysterious aspects of the shark are also explored, such as its sixth sense—the ability to pick up the electrical impulses of other creatures. Also included are safety guidelines for human swimmers and information about conservation efforts. Some of the topics and illustrations may be disturbing to younger readers, but for older students, this well-researched book provides an unflinching glimpse into the lives and habits of one of earth's most savage and enigmatic creatures.
