Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
What Do You Love? by Jonathan London, illus. by Karen Lee Schmidt, depicts a young puppy and his mother demonstrating various answers to the titular refrain. "What do you love?/ Jumping puddles/ and Mommy's cuddles,/ big trees and rustling leaves,/ read-alouds/ and sunset clouds." Schmidt's soft watercolors show mother and child from sun-up to tuck-in. It is difficult to shrink a full-size picture book down to board-book size. Some of the original grandeur is usually lost in the process. But when the book in question is very good to begin with, one can only applaud the fact that it is being made available again. Such is the case with Jonathan London's entry in the warm and cuddly genre of toddler books. His light, lilting verse is spare but effective. Karen Lee Schmidt's evocative watercolors (especially good in the night scenes) are a perfect fit. The board book itself is solid, with the illustrations effectively used. 2004 (orig. 2000), Red Wagon/Harcourt, Ages 6 mo. to 3.

PreS-K-In this rollicking and warm picture book, rhyming couplets catalog things that a puppy-person and his mother enjoy over the course of a day, such as hiding places and wild chases, and read-alouds and sunset clouds. Schmidt's double-page watercolor illustrations are effective from a distance and depict this active pair with vigorous and varying perspectives. They sing, jump, hug, and have fun together right up to bedtime. While literal-minded young listeners may wonder how that little guy can read a big chapter book or where the hiding places and park slides are since they're not depicted, the overwhelming energy of the book prevails. Preschoolers will relate to London's selection of cheerful activities and will no doubt want to add things they love to do with their moms.-Susan Hepler, Burgundy Farm Country Day School, Alexandria, VA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A pair of anthropomorphic pooches frolic through their day enumerating their favorite things. The book's title poses the question that a puppy and his adoring mother answer in sing-song verse. Short rhymes encompass the many facets of childhood delights, from silly songs to cozy talks. "Jumping puddles / and Mommy's cuddles, / big trees and rustling leaves, / read alouds / and sunset clouds. / What do you love?" Young readers will readily recognize a few of their own favorites, as London covers everything from rambunctious games of hide-and-seek to bedtime rituals. At the close, readers are encouraged to contribute their own individual likes to the list. Schimidt's full-page watercolors complete the effect. The oversized typeface, set in Lemonade Regular, allows for only a few words on each page, focusing the reader's eye on the generously colored illustrations. Warmly drawn scenes depict the happy canines engaged in the described activities and illuminate the loving bonds between mother and child. Preschoolers may even have a giggle over the pictures portraying the duo clad in human clothes, with furry tails peeping out the backs of their denim jeans. The gentle rhythm of the text, as it moves from daytime to evening activities, make this an ideal choice for bedtime, softly sending sleepy readers off to dream land.
