Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this sequel to What Does My Teddy Bear do All Day, a little girl and her teddy bear are going to bed. Since the teddy bear doesn't want to go to bed, the little girl decides to follow him on a couple of adventures reading books, playing hide and seek, building blocks, going to the bathroom, etc., until finally the little girl is ready to go to bed. At that point the teddy bear stays awake to watch out for her while she is asleep. The text in this book is a bit awkward; perhaps during translation the rhyming scheme was removed for the second half of the book. The illustrations are colorful with lots of "extra" things for children to find in each page, including two mice who are hiding in each picture. Children will be more captivated with the pictures than the story line. 2005, Penguin Young Readers Group, Ages 3 to 5.

PreS-K-In this sequel to What Does My Teddy Bear Do All Day? (Minedition, 2004), a young girl plays with her bear when she should be in bed. Together they read books, build with blocks, go to the potty, and jump on the bed. When she finally goes to sleep, the youngster imagines that her bear plays in the tub and keeps the scary shadows away. In the morning, teddy finally falls asleep after his busy night. While there are many sweet and fun moments in the narrative, the text awkwardly shifts from rhymed verse to prose. Muller's full-page paintings in bold and deep colors will hold children's attention where the text may not. There are many details to explore here, such as the nighttime antics of two mice and a rag doll. While the nocturnal adventures of teddy are not as compelling as his daytime explorations, larger libraries with the first book might want to add this title as well.-Rachel G. Kirkus Reviews
This companion tale to the team's What Does My Teddy Bear Do All Day? (2004) offers toddlers a peek at the nighttime antics of their favorite stuffed animals. Like his human companion, teddy bear has a difficult time getting to sleep. Together child and bear engage in covert excursions through the house, last minute runs to the potty and rowdy jumping sessions on the bed before feigning sleep when mom returns to the room. As the girl drifts off to sleep, she contemplates what her bear does during the evening hours. She considers elaborate scenarios involving midnight baths, valiant battles with creepy shadows and devoted watchfulness. When morning comes, the child knows she must repay the same faithful care of her now-slumbering bear. Hachler's fanciful tale strikes the right balance of sweetness and silliness. Muller uses blurred lines, and darkening hues in her engaging illustrations effectively convey the muted quality of twilight. The inclusion of an energetic mouse pair in nearly every illustration adds a touch of whimsy to the pictures. (Picture book. 3-6)
