HONORABLE MENTION, genre fiction category, Writer's Digest 2015 Self-Published Book Awards.
Lauren Beck's friends, phone, home, credit and credibility are gone, severed with surgical precision by an enemy intent on framing her for murder. Is it one of the insureds she was hired to investigate? The fellow employee she upstaged? Does the daughter of her landlady and dear friend, Corinne Wilder, hate her even more than she thought?
Whoever targeted her should beware. A former cop and cancer survivor knows how to fight for her life.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Review - Anon. N/A
Brave and determined, humorous despite it all, Lauren [Beck] digs for the truth even when she gets locked up. She's tough-minded, self-reliant, with an eye for a good-looking man and thirst for a good drink. Not a shred of self-pity; no pink ribbons. But Lauren's not hard-boiled, either. She loved the motherly Corinne and mourns her loss...An enjoyable investigation with an admirable, down-to-earth heroine.

Lauren Beck is a welcome addition to the female investigator circuit, and readers of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum and Sue Grafton's Kelsey Milhorne series will love her – she is funny, smart, creative and thoughtful. As both a cancer survivor and a prosecutor involved in law enforcement, I already love Beck's straightforward, no-nonsense, funny strong voice. Nancy Beam Winter, Prosecutor and former Asst. District Attorney

"...readers will be surprised when the villain is revealed. Strong and feisty, Lauren also displays a tender side that is sweetly sentimental. Her fight to reclaim her life is filled with suspense, and the novel is a gripping page-turner.

"Murray's delightful Pennsylvania mystery pits tough but compassionate Lauren Beck, insurance investigator and ex-cop, against unknown adversaries following the death from cancer of her friend Corinne...Murray's characterization and resourcefulness create a consistent persona that supports the central narrative role... convincing, well-phrased detail sustains atmosphere and keeps the plotting vigorous."

I loved the premise of this heroine and her back story. It simply pulled me in and held on tight. The character is smart, interesting, brave, highly relateable, and humorous. Add to that some hilarious action scenes, a well crafted plot, sharp dialogue, and nearly flawless writing and that makes this novel one of my top picks. This book should be picked up and savored!

“…a strong-minded, intelligent, and gutsy heroine with the enlightened life-focus of someone who has narrowly escaped death. I am already hooked on Lauren Beck and cannot wait for the next installment.

Meet the Author

Donna Huston Murray’s seven Ginger Barnes Main Line Mysteries (originally with St. Martin’s Press) feature a woman much like herself, a headmaster’s wife transplanted to an upscale neighborhood by her husband’s job. Recently she launched the Lauren Beck Crime Novel series featuring a young cancer survivor and former cop (suspense). Murray’s work also appears in the Edgar-award winning companion book, THE FINE ART OF MURDER, and the LETHAL LADIES I and II anthologies by Berkley. DYING FOR A VACATION is an earlier traditional mystery.
