This organized treatise on effective schools is "must" reading material for school leaders at all levels of public education. The authors outline the history and cultural contexts of schooling in the United States and past measures of accepted practices and standards. They address the powerful need for change to support an increasingly diverse, technologically driven world, particularly in terms of American socioeconomic trends, resources, attitudes and, most significantly, success. The paradigm for systemic change includes the basic correlates of effective schools: high expectations for success; strong instructional leadership; clear and focused mission; opportunity to learn/time on task; frequent monitoring of student progress; safe and orderly environment, and positive home-school relations. The text "unpacks" each correlate with clear, well-reasoned discussion, supported by strong research evidence. Multiple examples of tools for data collection and survey responses, as well as resources that could be implemented by even the smallest or poorest school district are included. Problems of resistance, differences and diverse philosophies are not ignored; instead practical and well-reasoned approaches to overcome these challenges are offered. This book is useful because it does not downplay the magnitude of either the problems or the efforts that must be made to correct them, and for the most part, the narrative maintains a quietly objective voice. In concluding, however, the authors do leave us with a powerful call to action. "Continuous school improvement based on the effective schools research and attendant practices is not a technical adjustment in the ways of the school, and it is not an intellectual calculation; rather, it is a moral journey, first and foremost."
