Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Rebecca O'Neil
In this teacher resource book, Charles Fuhrken, a test developer who has helped write assessment tests for several states, offers his inside knowledge about the structure of middle school reading assessment tests and strategies to help students and teachers prepare for them. Four main sections cover basic test lexicon; commonly assessed reading standards (such as vocabulary development and literary techniques); sample passages and test items with tips alongside; and a compilation of resources and reading activities to use in the classroom. Appendices provide charts and reproducibles for these activities. Fuhrken writes in a clear, straightforward manner, much like the test items he develops. By providing examples and references when discussing the field of education, he makes his work accessible to educators with varying degrees of experience. Though teachers may criticize such an overt "teaching to the test" approach, Fuhrken acknowledges that, regardless of one's stance on the efficacy of assessment tests, they are pervasive in today's schools, and knowledge is power for teachers and students alike. His peeks behind the curtain of test item construction serve to enlighten and empower both groups; as he states, "Confidence comes as a result of a deep awareness of test formats, test language, test tasks, test logic, and other test features..." Teacher guidance will be required for middle school students to find this book's information palatable and useful; middle school libraries with professional collections and public libraries with parent/teacher collections will want to make sure to purchase it.
