Barnes & Noble - Steve Futterman
On his debut recording for ECM, Mark Feldman displays why he’s the most prominent jazz violinist of his generation. Working in tandem with a diverse yet strikingly sympathetic ensemble comprising the British pianist Mark Taylor, the Scandinavian bassist Anders Jorim, and the American drummer Tom Rainey, Feldman exhibits his extraordinary scope as a musician and a composer. Swing merges with free form, meditative moments mingle with frenetic effusiveness, open-form improvisation mates with strict composition -- Feldman’s ripe conception makes it all work. If “Arcade,” the 20-minute-long opening piece, offers challenges from the get-go, the shorter selections that follow it hold the listener's attention with their gripping improvisations and superbly variegated group interplay. Throughout, Feldman, as usual, exhibits his stunning technical command and vast imagination. Highly recommended for all adventurous listeners.
