Overview

In What God Wants Every Dad to Know, Pastor James Merritt encourages dads to pass along to their children God’s timeless wisdom found in Proverbs. Through his personable and engaging style, he reveals important life principles on such key topics as

  • finances
  • use of the tongue
  • sexuality
  • work ethic
  • friendships

No book ever written has been a better or more practical guide than Proverbs for helping fathers guide their children toward right choices and away from wrong ones. The advice of wise King Solomon remains invaluable for today’s dads struggling with the pressures of home and career responsibilities, travel, broken families, and other realities of modern life.

Merritt makes liberal use of anecdotes and stories from his own experience as the father of three children as he urges dads to take seriously their important role as leaders in their homes and their responsibility to teach godly wisdom to their children.

--Bryant Wright, senior pastor, Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Marietta, GA

"Few Christian leaders possess the gifts and passion that Dr. James Merritt has for communicating God's truth with power and practicality. What God Wants Every Dad to Know challenges fathers with life-changing truth straight from God's Word that can transform our relationships with our kids. As a dad, I was personally stretched and encouraged by Dr. Merritt's teaching."
--Dr. Stephen N. Rummage, senior pastor, Bell Shoals Baptist Church

Reviewed by Lela Buchanan for Readers' Favorite Most parents want to do a good job of raising their children. Like marriage, though, we get most of our training "on the job" making for a very bumpy career in our closest, and most critical relationships. If only . . . if only we had received some wise counsel early on our journey as parents! "What God Wants Every Dad to Know" by James Merritt offers wise, practical and merciful advice specifically for dads, but it would be beneficial to anyone wanting to incorporate ethical and life-enhancing guidelines into their home environment. According to Merritt, "the most endangered species in America is not the spotted owl nor the snail darter, but the responsible father." The author backs up such statements with facts, sobering, even alarming, facts about the effects of absentee fathers on the children in our society today. Basing the book on the Biblical book of Proverbs, Merritt addresses such issues as anger and discipline, work and money, and the highly controversial subject of sex. This is a book for dads. I'm a woman, a mother and grandmother, and I loved this book! Although it is written from a Christian perspective, the author does not preach dogmatically. His words are penned with a wise and merciful hand. He makes sense. "You can be rich in two ways," he writes, "either in how much you have or in how little you want." The need for Godly parenting is real; the passion that Merritt communicates for fully-engaged fathering is palpable. "Your children must not only hear wisdom taught; they must see wisdom lived." Every parent and anyone striving to raise productive, morally upright children in our society today, should pick up a copy of this book. It will be one of the best investments you ever make.
