Overview

What Happened on Beale Street is an exciting addition to the Secrets of the South Mysteries from bestselling author Mary Ellis. These standalone, complex crime dramas follow a private investigator's quest to make the world a better place...solving one case at a time.

A cryptic plea for help from a childhood friend sends cousins Nate and Nicki Price from New Orleans to Memphis, the home of scrumptious barbecue and soulful blues music. When they arrive at Danny Andre's last known address, they discover signs of a struggle and a lifestyle not in keeping with the former choirboy they fondly remember.

Danny's sister, Isabelle, reluctantly accepts their help. She and Nate aren't on the best of terms due to a complicated past, yet they will have to get beyond that if they want to save Danny.

On top of Danny's alarming disappearance and his troubled relationship with Isabelle, Nate also has to rein in his favorite cousin's overzealousness as a new and eager PI. Confronted with a possible murder, mystery, and mayhem in the land of the Delta blues, Nate must rely on his faith and investigative experience to keep one or more of them from getting killed.

What Happened on Beale Street by Mary Ellis is my second foray into the stand alone Secrets of the South Mystery series and I am so happy to embark on another adventure through the southern states of America. I love familiar locations and mysteries, so when I won the first beautiful book, I was ecstatic and I want to tell you how ‘marvelous’ the continuing journey has been. A childhood pledge takes impulsive but lovable Nicki and her gang from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Memphis, Tennessee. Nate, her uptight but competent and loyal cousin and private investigator partner are on the case. It helps to have the wealthy and hunky Hunter to finance their trip and they are on their way in style. I love it. Made me think of Hart to Hart, the crime solving TV duo, only they are married. The characters are ‘real’, with all their good and bad exposed. They have big hearts and are there for each other. What do murder, stalking and a scavenger hunt have in common? What Happened on Beale Street. The mystery is not mind blowing, but the tension and pacing kept my curiosity peaked, turning page after page, until I was done. Not only did I want to know who the murderer was, but I was even more concerned and curious about Isabelle. BUT that’s a mystery you’ll have to find out for yourself. I thought I knew exactly how it would end, but Mary Ellis seems to be able to surprise me to the very last page. The suspense makes this hard, if not impossible, to stop reading once you start. I see more stories coming with this wonderful cast of characters and I am curious where we will travel to next. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of What Happened of Beale Street from Mary Ellis.

What Happened on Beale Street Mary Ellis Book Summary: Cryptic plea for help from a childhood friend sends cousins Nate and Nicki Price from New Orleans to Memphis, the home of scrumptious barbecue and soulful blues music. Confronted with a possible murder, mystery, and mayhem in the land of the Delta blues, Nate must rely on his faith and investigative experience to keep one or more of them from getting killed. Review: This one started off with a bang! Danny the man who dies was a fantastic character and I was sad that he was the victim. I true man who lived out his Christianity authentically. There were two mysteries going on at once. One a murder and totally unrelated was jewelry that was hidden in a scavenger hunt was never found. I loved both of them!! Nikki and Hunter were part of it along with Isabelle and Nate, Nikki’s boss & partner. It just kept getting better and better as it progressed. The mystery did not come together until then end and for someone who likes to guess the ‘who did it’ there was no way to do that!! Which was awesome. Characters were rich and well written with a real life kind of interaction. I would like to thank Net Galley and Harvest House Publishing for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone. From opening to ending this story has kept action constant . Steady pacing, witty dialogue characterizing personalities - add humour and romance, and Ms Ellis offers a uniquely flavoured Memphis mystery! A diversionary subplot provided excellent fun and a reading refreshment from the intensity of the suspense. Characters engaged my attention and care as did the developing relationships. I'm still catching my breath from some high adrenaline moments!

What Happened on Beale Street is book two in the Secrets of the South Mysteries series. Mary Ellis has done it again! She has written another book that is outstanding. A book that will surely grab you right from the start and not let you go until the very end. There are so many twist and turns that happen in this book that will keep you guessing all the way through it. You get to catch up with your favorite PI team and meet some new characters. There is so much love, faith, hope and determination in this story. I so love Nicki Price and her determination. Characters and story background so well written that I felt as though I could hear the blues music playing and taste the food right along with the characters. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series. Be sure to order your copy of What Happened on Beale Street today. 5 stars! I received a copy of this book for my honest review.

Mary Ellis in her new book, “What Happened on Beale Street” Book Two in the Secrets of the South Mysteries published by Harvest House Publishers gives us another case with Nicki Price. From the back cover: How can music so beautiful hide something so deadly? A cryptic plea for help from a childhood friend sends cousins Nate and Nicki Price from New Orleans to Memphis, the home of scrumptious barbecue and soulful blues music. When they arrive at Danny Andre’s last known address, they discover signs of a struggle and a lifestyle not in keeping with the former choirboy they fondly remember. Danny’s sister, Isabelle, reluctantly accepts their help. She and Nate aren’t on the best of terms due to a complicated past, yet they will have to get beyond that if they want to save Danny. On top of Danny’s alarming disappearance and his troubled relationship with Isabelle, Nate also has to rein in his favorite cousin’s overzealousness as a new and eager PI. Confronted with a possible murder, mystery, and mayhem in the land of the Delta blues, Nate must rely on his faith and investigative experience to keep one or more of them from getting killed. This time this new addition to Mary Ellis’s standalone, Secrets of the South Mysteries moves to Memphis. This time she teams up with her cousin, Nate. They have come to answer Nate’s friend, Danny’s, call for help but he seems to be missing. Danny’s sister has a past with Nate so they are not on the best of terms and they keep encountering secrets everywhere they go. This one isn’t going to be easy. Nicki and Nate are terrific characters that Ms. Ellis has breathed life into and that we root for them to succeed. And did I mention that there is a romance also? “What Happened on Beale Street” is loaded with twists and turns and red herrings that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next. I think Ms. Ellis has given us an excellent mystery and this is a terrific way to continue the series!”What Happened on Beale Street” is a lot of fun and it entertains you as you keep flipping pages as you try to find out what is going to happen next. Ms. Ellis has a great way of telling the story and moving it along at a nice pace. A really enjoyable read. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Harvest House Publishers. WHAT HAPPENED ON BEALE STREET is the second book in Ms. Ellis's Secrets of the South Mysteries series, but it easily stands alone. I didn't read Midnight on the Mississippi, the first book in the series, and didn't get lost in WHAT HAPPENED ON BEALE STREET at all. Set in Memphis, Tennessee, that is enough to set this country girl's teeth on edge. I am not a Memphis native, but I have been there a grand total of three times in my life (so far) and it is scary enough without reading about the seedier part of town. Add in a murder, druggies, down-and-out individuals, creepy stalkers, and missing jewels and you've got a tale that is sure to please most cozy mystery lovers. The story is rather slow. It is definitely not edge of your seat, have to keep reading fiction. It is not scary and is easy to put down. Out of the mysteries included I found the missing jewels the most intriguing and the one I most wanted to read about. Ms. Ellis is talented with Amish, historical, and cozy mystery, and author that apparently can write anything with ease. Fans of her Amish or historical will likely love her contemporary cozy mystery, too. Don't miss WHAT HAPPENED ON BEALE STREET for a taste of Memphis you won't soon forget.

I was so excited to read What Happened on Beale Street by Mary Ellis. This is her second in the Secrets of the South Mysteries. I love reading Ms. Ellis’ series because she develops her characters so well, I feel like they are part of my family. This is a great book. I loved all the layers that she wove into this story. We had the main storyline which was great in and of itself. Then we had a little side romance happening, then we had another mystery that we needed to solve - as well as the question of “Are these two mysteries related or separate?” and then we had a whole ‘nother angle of fun and intrigue that kept me bringing this book along everywhere I went so I could keep reading. Terrific book - can’t wait for the next one in the series because Ms. Ellis writes the best storylines, the best characters and the best endings!

When Nicki’s best friend asks for help, she and cousin Nate head to Memphis in time to see his body pulled from a river. Being a blues musician doesn’t seem like a secure way to make a living, and Danny’s apartment is a dump. What had he gotten into? After Nicki oversteps her boundaries, Nate orders her off the case while he continues to investigate. Danny’s sister Isabelle is an ice queen, but Nate can’t shake the pull toward her he felt in high school. Isabelle begins to realize Nate really seems like a nice guy, but she’s dealing with her brother’s death and a creepy stalker. Nicki dives into the mystery of a decades-old scavenger hunt at the posh Carlton Hotel. Wealthy couples hid jewels for their friends to find, and Nicki and the former concierge believe the last hunt’s prize is still hidden. Searching for it lands Nicki in hot water. Or, I should say, cold water. Danny was murdered, but you’ll never guess who did it. A seamy side of playing in nightclubs comes to light, perhaps better understood for someone who loves the blues. As Danny’s character is revealed, his friend and sister realize they never really knew him. Isabelle was hard to like and understand. She does recognize she needs to make changes in her life. She’s being stalked, yet despite a restraining order, she engages the stalker in conversation while pushing away the people who truly care about her. An enjoyable sequel to Midnight on the Mississippi. I received this book from the publisher, and was not required to give a positive review.

Wow! What a great book! What Happened on Beale Street, the second book in Mary Ellis' Secrets of the South series, grabbed me on the first page and didn't turn me loose until the very last word. When unfortunate events like sleeping or working dared to interrupt my reading, the characters and their problems continued to swirl through my mind. Cousins and private investigators Nicki and Nate Price rush from New Orleans to Memphis after a plea for help from childhood friend Danny Andre. They arrive too late, and now must solve a murder. Was Danny the victim of a fellow musician jealous of Danny's talent? Did one of the recovering addicts Danny tried to help turn on him? Danny's beautiful, distraught sister, Isabelle, reluctantly accepts Nate's and Nicki's help; however, Isabelle has her own issues to deal with. After a failed marriage to a philandering husband, she usually holds herself aloof from others making her seem cold (the Ice Queen, as dubbed by Nate). Now a man she dared to share one date with, against her better judgement, is stalking her. Could he have had something to do with Danny's murder? In the midst of murders and stalkings, the fancy hotel Nicki and Nate are staying in is harboring secrets of its own. Nicki is determined to put the clues together to complete a treasure hunt begun by a few wealthy guests years ago. This is definitely a five-star book you don't want to miss. Although it is the second book in the series, it is not necessary to have read the first book. This book is a story all its own--and what a story it is! You will love the characters; they are bright, witty, and believable. The plot races along, and descriptions are so vivid you will be able to picture the Carlton Hotel, Beale Street, and even the elderly former hotel concierge Henry Prescott.I have nothing but praise for this fast-paced, superbly written story that combines suspense, romance, and faith. You have to read from cover to cover to discover what really did happen on Beale Street. Thanks, Mary, for another five-star novel! Susan Siimpson, author

I have to start out by saying, I loved it! I had never read anything from Mary Ellis with the exception of her Amish books, so I was happy to have a chance to read this book. I was not disappointed! The action was fast, the storyline well thought out. I would think, yes that is the murderer, and then be wrong. I love when I am kept guessing, the unpredictability makes a great mystery. I enjoyed that this truly was three mysteries in one story. You will have to read the book to discover those mysteries, but they will keep your interest. This makes me want to visit Memphis. This book was provided for review purposes only, no payment was received for this review. The book releases April 1, 2016, buy your copy at your favorite book store.

Price Investigations has another murder case to solve, this time in the home of the blues! A distress call in the middle of the night from an old friend sends cousins Nicki and Nate Price north to Memphis in hopes of a rescue. What they find instead is a grisly crime scene and their friend's sister demanding answers. Nicki also digs up another cold case to unravel, this time involving missing jewels. Picking up where book one ends, this complex mystery kept me guessing up until the end! Nate Price is featured this time around, as he takes the lead in the case and really shines as the hero. It was interesting to watch the process as he began the investigation, taking in the colorful music scene and downtrodden areas of the city, and learning a lot of surprising things about his friend Danny along the way. Misjudging people based on where they live and what they do for a living, is a fault many of us trip over it seems. Nicki's character is a fun, lovable one, especially as she befriends the people from the old hotel and attempts to solve the fifty year old mystery associated with it. The ending proved to be action-packed with a satisfying conclusion. Themes of faith in action, dealing with prejudice, and domestic violence added interesting layers to the story. Fans of clean mysteries with a little romance would probably enjoy this book. It can be read as a stand alone, though I'd recommend reading the first book in the series to fill in the fun details of Nicki and Hunter's story. 4.5 stars (Book provided by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.)
