Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"I could barely put What Happens When Women Say Yes to God down and when I did, all I could think about was picking it back up again. My heart leaped for the freedom I found on the pages, as I realized that saying yes to God meant saying yes to a life filled with extraordinary experiences in my ordinary life. Lysa TerKeurst has a way of bringing you into her everyday life through her writing. Her theme throughout this book is this: finding a holy God in the middle of life's mundane activities. Saying yes to God means saying no to myself and this book has helped me do that. Lysa has allowed the Lord to take her greatest weaknesses and turn them into her greatest strengths. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking to mature in their personal relationship with the Lord as well as with others around them."

How to Hear God's Voice"Can you hear me, now?" - GodEvery day, God speaks to us. Sometimes He invites us to draw close and listen as He reveals Himself, His character, and His direction. Other times He calls us to participate in His purposes. Still other times He simply whispers to remind us of His amazing love for us.Oh, what a joy it is to know God speaks to me! But I've found that many believers are missing this vital element in their relationship with Him. As I've talked with people about my own radical obedience journey, they are quick to ask how they might hear from God too. Maybe you have some of these same questions: How do I know if God is speaking to me? How do I discern whether it is His voice speaking or just my own idea? What if I feel God telling me to do something that doesn't seem to make sense? There is no magic formula for being able to discern God's voice. We can learn to recognize it the way we recognize the voices of those close to us: by knowing Him. And when we know Him, we can tell if what we are feeling led to do is from Him or not.I'll be honest. Though I hear from God all the time, I've never heard His voice audibly. When God speaks to me, there's a certain impression on my heart that I've come to recognize as Him. I also ask myself five questions to determine if what I'm hearing is from God or not:1. Does what I'm hearing line up with Scripture?
God will never speak to us or tell us to do something that is contrary to His Word. But unless we know Scripture, we will not be able to discern whether what we are hearing is consistent or not with the Word. I encourage you to get a journal and start recording the verses you study and some of your personal experiences with the things you are learning as you read God's Word.2. Is what I'm hearing consistent with God's character?
God's Word also provides rich information regarding His character. Just as God always speaks in accordance with His Word, He speaks in accordance with His character. God will not say things that are inconsistent with who He is. The longer we know Him and the more we experience Him personally, the more we learn about His character.3. Is what I'm hearing confirmed through messages at church or my quiet times?
When God is speaking to me about a particular issue, I cannot escape it. Around every corner there is a sermon or Bible study lesson or speaker's topic or conversation with a friend that is consistent with what I've been hearing from God in my time along with Him. When we invest in spending time alone with God, He will speak to us. Listen for His voice and then look for the message to be confirmed.4. Is what I'm hearing beyond me?
Sometimes God calls us to do something big that we can't do in our own strength - either it is beyond our ability or beyond our nature human desire. It is not something we can strategize and manipulate into being in and of ourselves. It can only happen by God's divine intervention. Don't look at your inabilities and dwell in insecurities. Look at the Almighty God. See this call as your opportunity to watch Him work in you and through you. If you answer yes to the question 'Is this beyond me?' chances are God is speaking.5. Is what I'm hearing pleasing to God?
It's easy to talk ourselves out of thinking we've heard from God. I think we'll pretty much use any excuse to convince ourselves it's not His voice so we don't need to act. If what you are doing pleases God, then even if what you thought you heard from Him wasn't His voice, you still please Him. We should always seek to err on the side of pleasing God. Ask this question, and you'll now what to do.Use this five-question filter as a starting place in your conversations with God. When you live in the expectation of hearing God's voice, you will. In Jeremiah 29:13, God promises, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart." Respond by saying yes to Him and confidently walking in absolute dependence and glorious obedience. For more information on this topic, read Lysa's book, What Happens When Women Say Yes to God.Lysa TerKeurst helps everyday women live an adventure of faith through following Jesus Christ. Reading it for the third time in a year!

I bought What Happens When Women Say Yes To God about a year ago. I read it through and did the Bible study after each chapter. It was such a blessing to my life that six months later, I did it again. I had also told a friend of the book and she did the study. It was such a blessing to both of us that we are now doing a group Bible study with ten women. We are currently on the third chapter and I have already seen such an incredible difference in all of the women, including myself. Lysa has blessed so many women with this book and I am so grateful that she allowed God to use her.

This is a wonderful book! I know it will be something that I can read over and over. We are doing the study with 20 other ladies at our church and I am excited to see the change. I know there is already in myself. Become a Yes Woman!

Reviewed by Mary DeKok Blowers for Readers' Favorite

Big things happen in forties in the Bible. Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days. The rain fell on Noah’s ark for 40 days and nights. The Israelites wandered 40 years in the desert. Moses spent 40 years in Midian after fleeing Egypt, preparing for his life mission. You would probably agree that all these periods preceded big events in the Bible.

The What Happens When Women Say Yes to God devotional, by Lysa TerKeurst, takes 40 readings for 40 days that will alter your life. President of Proverbs 31 Ministries, TerKeurst has plenty of life experience to lead you through the dark days to find God on the other side. With headings such as “Tearing Down the Impossible,” “The Cussing Thoughts,” “I’m Going to Disappoint Someone,” and “From Overpowered to Empowered,” there is something here to excite everyone who reads this book. The latter chapter heading really spoke to me; I’m working full time plus I am the only child of my widowed mother left in town to care for her. I'm a homeowner, a newlywed, and trying to get a writing career going. I feel overwhelmed every day and Lysa’s advice is to identify one thing to improve this month, realize lots of people would trade their best day for my worst, and give myself some space to think. Appealing advice that is easier said than done sometimes, but on target.

As I lead the final segment of the lunch hour Bible study this week I find myself wondering what God would have me do next. More and more I think He wants me to rest, seek Him, read His Word, and listen. What Happens When Women Say Yes to God helps me break these goals down into manageable parts and find the time to just be with Him. I know I need it. I know it helps me. Lysa TerKeurst has written a pocket-sized solace for weary spirits.

    Unreadable places

Throughout the book the words are all messed up on the Nook book version. Some of the words are broken up and some are all run together but the end result is to stop reading because it just gets too frustrating. A waste of money for me. :-(

    Phenominal

I came across this book by chance. I was searching for another title, but this ended up being a gift from God... seriously! Lysa's message through first personabke accounts, story-telling and the chosen scriptures she refers to have strengthened my spiritual growth. This was an awesome read and I hated to reach the last page. Worth every penny!
