Being a longtime fan of folksinger Tom Rush, I eagerly anticipated the arrival of his first studio album in about 30 years; after several spins on my CD player, I decided that it was well worth the wait! Rush has come out with a fine collection of songs(mostly his own self-penned compositions)that only serve to enhance his reputation as a fine singer/songwriter, as well as a talented interpreter of other people's material. The standout Rush compositions include the title song, "Hot Tonight", "Silly Little Diddle", and "River Song"; while the standout covers include the Dobie Gray classic, "Drift Away", "Too Many Memories" (w/Emmylou Harris), the anti-war song,"All A Man Can Do", and a new version of the traditional "Casey Jones"(w/Nanci Griffith). The rest? well...overall, it's a great album(in my semi-humble opinion)so do yourself a favor; buy it!

It's hard to believe that What I Know marked the first Tom Rush studio album in 35 years when it was released in early 2009. But it's true -- although he released quite a bit of studio material in the first decade of his career, and has remained active as a touring musician since the mid-'70s, this is the first studio product to emerge since then. "Sounds like he's never been away" is the kind of cliché you hear often when these projects appear, but in Rush's case, it seems more appropriate than it does in most such situations. His vocal style remains the same -- good-natured, friendly, and intimate, with a tinge of weary wistfulness. Thankfully, the production, like...
