School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-These brief, pictorial treatments attempt to show the gradations of expression associated with confusion, sadness, and fear. Simple sentences such as, "My eyes get big when I am scared," are accompanied by a full-page color photograph of various children demonstrating big eyes or furrowed brows-whatever trait the text specifies. The point that different people express emotions differently is certainly made, but some of the pictures could easily express any emotion or no emotion, and so may do more to confound than to clarify. A bilingual index listing between six to eight terms shares space with a pictorial dictionary, showing fragments of some of the photos labeled with facial features (mouth, eyelash, etc.). The texts are bland and unexciting. Saxton Freymann's Vegetal Como Eres (Scholastic, 2001) is cleverly illustrated and allows for the exercise of imagination and the discussion of emotions. Children's Literature - Carollyne Hutter
This early reader is part of the series "Let's Look at Feeling," which explores how emotions look. Other books in the series delve into the look of being angry, happy, sad, scared, and surprised. They all have similar formats with a one-line sentence on the page and full photograph on the accompanying page. In this book on confusion, the reader sees the many looks of confusion on different children's faces. The vocabulary of the text covers parts of the face and action verbs, such as open, move, and look. This would be useful in kindergarten and first-grade reading classes. It could also be used in Pre-K classes when discussing emotions. Reviewer: Carollyne Hutter
