Barnes & Noble - William Pearl
At age 47, it’s certainly time that Donny Osmond got some respect. If his days as a teenage heartthrob with the Osmonds remain his signature career achievment, he has since gone on to establish himself as a reputable singer and entertainer. What I Meant to Say featuring the U.K. hit “Breeze On By,” is a mature showing for this pop demi-icon, continuing the strides made by his earlier Somewhere in Time and This Is the Moment. It also marks his first leap into the water as a producer with Gary Barlow of Take That fame and Eliot Kennedy, a Spice Girls associate as well as featuring original compositions that skillfully display how far he’s come from his teenybopper days. ...

Osmond’s ballads speak from the heart of a man who has balanced the demands and rewards of a lifetime in show business with unabashed devotion to his family. On his 54th album, Osmond reveals that he’s all grown up.
All Music Guide - Rob Theakston
After a couple of records and a popular talk show met its end, Donny Osmond was definitely on the comeback trail. Or as much of a comeback trail as '70s teen idols can travel. 2001's This Is the Moment was a collection of show tunes which won over fans and critics alike. It was followed shortly thereafter by 2002's Somewhere in Time; a collection of contemporary soft rock standards. Fast-forward two years to find Osmond still in fine form on What I Meant to Say; his first full-length album with original new material in over a decade. Granted there are still cover tunes here Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" and the Burt Bacharach standard "This Guy's in Love with You" get the Osmond work over, but what is truly surprising is the quality of original compositions penned and produced by Osmond and friends. What I Meant to Say takes Osmond down roads filled with soft rock ballads and slow jams obviously inspired by quiet storm, R&B, and smooth jazz, and more often than not the results complement Osmond's voice quite well. The mere exception to the rule would be the Backstreet Boys' clone "Shoulda' Known Better," which unfortunately finds Osmond desperately attempting to write a pop tune four years past its "sell by" date; it's insulting to the smooth delivery and mature presentation of the rest of the album. Fans of Donny, of course, will purchase this and revel in its glory and rightfully so. It's another victory in a career filled with them. And with that timeless boyish charm and star-charting smile, it proves once again that you can knock an Osmond down, but never, ever count them out.

I'm Glad He's Finally Said It!!

This album is a true measure of Donny's devotion to his music, his fans, and his family! I've been an all-time fan of his music (didn't matter to me that he didn't write it!) and now I'm in love all over again. He shows the world his talent is not only his voice but writing and producing, too! I've turned many of my friends and family members who were not fans onto his music...I'm sure you'll appreciate it, too! Donny...you've always had my love and respect...Congratulations on another job well done!

    He's BAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not only can he sing, but he can write and produce too!!!! As a long time Donny fan I expected to like this CD, but when I play it for other people their reaction is the best. Finally people can see this is not the teen idol of the 70's but a true talent for all time!! One Dream is a song where you can literally feel your heart being tugged, What I Meant to Say holds a deep and beautiful meaing for those who have a hard time expressing their feelings, and Insecurtiy picks it up a notch and makes you feel like dancing. Donny has shown his true depth as an entertainer on this CD and he will just keep getting better and better!!!

    Classic man

He never fails to cover my favorite songs. And he has a beautiful voice. His last album was Somewhere in Time. Check out the movie, this guy has nice taste. This is an album to have if you have good taste in music.

    Must have for any collection

Aged to perfection!! Whether you've been following Donny for years or just have an ear for this genre, this is a must have for your collection. I must say Donny sure has come a long way from his “I’m a little bit country…” days. Sit back in a warm bath or snuggle up with your significant other while sipping wine and just enjoy. :) The cd is a blend of jazzy/pop and romantic ballads. My fav song off the album is “In it for love”, one of the more upbeat groovy songs on the album. It’s simply intoxicating…aahhh. A truly revealing Donny lets go and shows how sensitive he can be with “Insecurity” and “Broken”. This is a mature and sexy collection of works from Donny Osmond. Very sexy Donny dear! <3

I have been a Donny fan as long as I can remember, and He gets better and better. These songs come from the heart. "My perfect rhyme" dedicated to his wife Debby, and "whenever your in trouble" to his children. Buy it! Share It with everybody!!!! Gotta love that voice!!

This Voice Has Only Got Better With Age!

If you are thinking of the Donny Osmond from the 70's, THINK AGAIN. This is a true professional singer and entertainer with a real voice and music to share, not one made from a mold in production room like so many of today's lip sinc wanna-be's. Mr. Osmond finally wrote and produced his own music for the first time on this album. All you have to do is listen to the CD with an open mind and ear to hear how his music and voice have changed through the years. And the change is for the better. From Broadway, to Rock, to Pop, to Ballads, this guy can do it all. I have had this CD for a day and can't find anything I dislike about it. I have ordered a couple extra copies now to share with friends that can appreciate the talent expressed. Congratulations on your first writing / producing project, Mr. Osmond. I'll be watching for more.

    The best so far!

As a lifetime Donny Osmond fan I couldn't wait to play this CD. All I can say is WONDERFUL! The songs on What I Meant to Say are deep, soulful, some upbeat, but all beautiful and a fabulous display of Donny's talents. The only thing that disturbs me is why this CD, which would appeal to any muisic lover, is not getting the publicity it deserves. I bought it at Barnes & Noble store and I had to ask for it, it wasn't even with new releases, not at this store or any other. The word needs to get out and this CD needs to be getting the headlines it deserves!

He keeps getting better and better!

I love this cd!!!!!! This is truly awesome and well done. If you still think of Donny as the teen idol, you should listen to this cd. It will open your eyes that he's reached whole new dimension, and just keeps getting better and better. The songs on this cd are very powerful, and from the heart. Donny's dedication to his music, his fans, his faith, and his family is really something to be admired.

    It's Finally Here!

Donny's talent never fails to impress! Donny's voice is marvelous, the music is top-notch, and the words range from heartfelt to fun. The ballads are beautiful and touching, while the groovin' songs are fun and sexy. I feel that it is his best CD yet!

    FABULOUS!!!

That is all I have to say about this CD!! I believe it is the best CD Donny Osmond ever did. His voice sounds better than ever and the songs are deep felt and truly well written. Donny Osmond should write more of his own music. This CD really sets him apart from other performers. I would recommend it to fans everywhere. If you are not a fan, this CD will definately make you one!! Great job Donny.

    As recommended by Billboard magazine

DONNY OSMOND Album Title: What I Meant to Say Producer(s): Donny Osmond, Gary Barlow, Eliot Kennedy Genre: POP Label/Catalog Number: Decca B0003737 Release Date: Jan. 11 Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: January 22, 2005 Never say never. Donny Osmond's new album, "What I Meant to Say"—his 54th—debuted in the top 30 in the United Kingdom and spawned a No. 8 single in the breezy, inviting "Breeze On By." Fortunately, at this point in history, most of those who had posters of teen idol Donny on the wall have grown to appreciate those things that are precious and few in the States today: memorable melodies and pure, unaffected singing. And Osmond delivers aces, with a dozen personal pop anthems, 10 of which he wrote. Most are lush ballads, teeming with soaring, satisfying vocals and warm, full-bodied production. Two covers—Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" and "This Guy's in Love With You" from Burt Bacharach/Hal David—ice the cake. A nice change of direction from previous Broadway and covers projects, "What I Meant to Say" is an inspired effort from a performer who has been working his magic for an astonishing 40 years now. And he has never sounded better.—CT

Donny proves he's still got it

This 54th album by Donny Osmond proves the man just gets better with age. All but 2 of these songs were written by him. This is the first album he has produced. The songs are all from Donny's heart and his voice is unbelievably smooth and romantic on the slow songs and smooth and sexy on the upbeat songs! Listen to this CD with new ears... he's not the Donny of the 70's. He's grown up and it shows. And never write his name as "Donnie" - he despises that and any huge fan knows that :-)

    Just ask for money Donnie

If Mr. osmond needed some cash, I'm sure the fans woulda helped him out. I actually bought this album and let me tell you, I don't know what he was thinking when he put this one together. As a long time Donnie Osmond fan, let me tell ya folks, this is his worst effort yet. The whole album sounds like it was made in my basement. The production quality was horrible. Then the songs themselves were so sad and down. Since the cancelation of his show, it's been all downhill. While I will always be a Donnie fan, I just can't listen to this crappola. Sorry Donnie.

    It's a new & improved Donny!

Bubblegum music? I don't think so! Get ready to jump into a hammock, kick off your shoes, sip on some lemonade and just watch life "Breeze On By". That's the title of Donny's new single available for download on iTUNES. Get ready 'cause Donny is back!
