Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jillian Kobelin
Create a safe plan of action for encountering strangers with the help in this volume of the "What If" series. The book provides suggestions for what kids should do if a stranger approaches. Portraying different scenarios where kids may encounter grown-ups or teenagers they do not know, the book provides tips for each situation coupled with illustrated depictions. The safety tips on each page include checking with parents before talking to or helping a stranger, choosing a family password, and feeling comfortable saying no. It is important for children to know the guidelines for talking to strangers before an encounter were to occur in order for them to feel confident and stay safe. Check the back of the book for additional helpful information such as situational role-playing, a glossary, and further reading. The educational element in the "What If" series serves well for starting the conversation about interactions with strangers at home or in the classroom! Reviewer: Jillian Kobelin

Meet the Author

The fourth girl in a family of 8 children, Colleen Madden made it through childhood pretending to be a space princess with a wookie sidekick and drawing in her cardboard box art studio. Colleen graduated from a small liberal arts school in Massachusetts, with a contract major in illustration and English literature. She is currently residing in the Philadelphia area, with her writer-husband, Patrick, and their 2 sons, Sean and Gabe. She is daily inspired by her 3 boys, who champion the quirkier and more complicated side of life and always, ALWAYS make her laugh out loud. She has illustrated for many different kinds of clients and is the recipient of an International Greeting Card Louie Award. When not illustrating, Colleen can be found battling slugs in her shade garden or pretending to be a long-distance runner.
