Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Anita Barnes Lowen
What does it mean to be green? It means taking care of the earth. It means keeping the earth healthy. And what is a green garden? It is an earth-friendly garden that in small ways saves energy and resources and provides a home for birds and insects. From the "Going Green" series, this book is filled with facts (the average American throws away about one pound of food each day) and lots of suggestions for practicing "reduce, reuse and recycle" in the garden. Kids can start a compost bin or pile. With adult help and enough space and sunlight, kids can grow food in their backyards. They can point out the dangers of pesticides and herbicides and even convince Dad and Mom to give up the gas lawn mover and use a push mower instead! The suggested activities need a good amount of adult assistance and many are not realistic for kids living in urban settings. Every page is illustrated with photographs that support the accompanying text. The book includes a table of contents as well as a glossary. A good resource for students learning about environmental issues. Reviewer: Anita Barnes Lowen
