Children's Literature - Jodie Peters
This text considers the idea of culture and examines how people are very different all over the world. Although we all have the same basic needs, Kalman compares areas within cultures. She examines religious beliefs, clothing, food, music and dance, sports and celebrations which differ from culture to culture. Additional sections, such as "Fun with Culture" and "The Culture of Peace" round out the book, suggesting to readers that we, as members in a society, should accept others and promise to live by peaceful means. Although this book lacks continuity and includes some topics that seem somewhat scattered, the author includes a selection of vivacious photos which exemplify the cultural depictions described in the text. The text features are the strength of this publication. Most often the author's remarks about any culture are sweeping generalizations. The book is written in a simplistic fashion and speaks to beginning readers. This is a text from the "Our Multicultural World" series. Reviewer: Jodie Peters
