Reviewed by Kristie Ingerto for Readers Favorite "What is Dreaming?", written by Etan Boritzer and illustrated by Jeff Vernon, encourages the exploration of and discussions about dreams which can be frightening and a difficult concept for children to grasp. This book provides various explanations for why we dream what we do; for example, our dreams may contain various events that have taken place throughout the day. Also, some dreams are happy, while others are scary or sad; explanations for this is given as well. Ways to cope with bad dreams and strategies for trying to control your dreams are also shared in the book. Dreams and possible explanations are described in great detail. There are funny ideas thrown into the story that will make children stop and think and also make them laugh at the same time. This book is written in a language that is geared for children and can be understood by children. Terms that may be unknown as well as some theories are explained. The illustrations are beautiful and are a great addition to the book. They are very vibrant and jump out at the reader. The details in the illustrations are amazing and I know that children will love looking at them and finding all of the little details that go along with the story. I love the border around the pages that too have the words on them. They are such a good ideas for these books!
Another great book in Etan Boritzer's 'What is?" series on life concepts and difficult subjects. This wonderful book helps to discuss scary dreams and fun dreams with our 8 year old Samantha. She "got it" that dreams have meanings, especially scary dreams. She also has some confidence because of this book on what she can do about her dreams. Now when Sam has a dream we can discuss it kind of like a game or a mystery to figure out what the dream means, especially in relation to her daily school, home and social life. Very much recommended!
