Children's LiteraturePart of the "Rookie Read-About Science" series, this paperback edition on electricity introduces children to everything from where electricity comes from to what happens when you turn on a light switch. While probably best suited to children with a propensity toward scientific subjects, it may also prove interesting to younger children who are fascinated by learning how things work. Because of the more limited audience for this type of book the material may be a bit dry for some kids. Despite this, the text is very easy to read and the format makes a good learning opportunity for new readers. The photographs that support each bit of text are colorful and interesting which may also help keep children's attention. One thing I would have hoped, given the subject matter, is that the author would have touched on the potential dangers of electricity and the precautions children can and should take when working with electrical appliances and outlets. For a book that is basically well-written, the addition of this very real concern could have given this publication a far broader appeal. 2004, Children's Press/Scholastic, Ages 4 to 7.
