Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
Starting with how to find a pulse, the young reader will learn some amazing factoids, like a heart will beat 36 million times in one year. There are clear pictures showing where the heart is located and a cut away view of a heart. The three steps of a heart beat are explained and beautifully illustrated. Each book in this series, "Inside My Body," has "extreme body facts" sidebars. You will learn that you have about a hundred thousand kilometers of blood vessels-enough to go around the earth two and a half times. The youngest person to receive a heart transplant was ninety minutes old. A favorite part for the older reader is the "science behind the myth" sidebars. Your heart is not on the left side, but slightly tilted to the left. The short two page chapter format with one word subtitles is engaging to a young reader. The "Inside My Body" books each have a glossary. Young students could even learn to write papers using this series. This text will enhance any classroom or library lucky enough to have it.
