Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Find out about what space is in the context of art; explore the different works of art and how space is used. The text provides a simple description about space, and the illustrations help to support the concept. The insets direct your attention to the concept of space in a work of art by artists such as Manet, van Gogh, and Monet. The boldface words in the main text are located in the pictorial glossary in the back of the book. Some readers who are beginning to read informational text may need some support and guidance with the format and content vocabulary. This book is one in the "Get Art Smart" series which explores different art concepts including line, form, color, shape, and texture. Each book in the series follows a similar format and presentation. The books make a nice resource for beginners for a lesson in art or art appreciation. For additional information, there are a few suggested books and websites for exploration. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

K-Gr 3–These books describe and explain concepts, techniques, and phenomena in art in a collaborative, first-person plural tone that uses accessible, well-thought-out phrases. Concrete visual examples are in the form of frequent and excellent reproductions of fine art in a variety of mediums. Although the examples are, for the most part, drawn from the Western canon, Egyptian, Japanese, and Native American art also make appearances. An exceptionally spacious layout gives each concept room to breathe. Even children who regularly employ the relevant techniques will benefit from the explanations and illustrations in these books. The authors also provide short but excellent lists of print and online further-reading. Respectable and respectful resources.
