Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of the "Sci-Hi" series, these books offer a fully grounded, scientific approach to controversial issues. In this case, the authors focus on the causes and problems of invasive species. The topics of this series are challenging for adults who have studied the issues, so it is particularly impressive that the writing here is neither too dense, nor too easy for the middle reader audience they have targeted. "What Makes A Species Invasive?" Hartman and Meshbeshler ask at the beginning of a chapter. "Each species of life arose in a specific region of Earth. Although many species have spread to new places, only a few of them are described as invasive. Species may become invasive in places where they have no natural enemies or they out compete native species." The book addresses how species invade, the damage they cause, genetic changes, risks of invasion, and how people are fighting these invaders. In addition, it offers case studies on specific species. A summary at the end provides an overview. Illustrated with lively and accurate photos, the photos and the page design provide a nice balance for the difficult concepts being presented. Backmatter includes a glossary and index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
