Overview

What Kind of Man... has been nominated for Global eBook Awards in the category Sci Fi- Fantasy Paranormal/Fantasy Supernatural
PREPOSTEROUS, NUTTY and ENTERTAINING--
Franklin Pierce, fourteenth president of the United States, is perhaps the least-understood American president. What Kind of Man... takes a look at his life as it was historically, and it also takes a small peek at what his life could be, considering his brains and ability. This book is as preposterous as it is entertaining. It is filled with a humor that is generated by a century-gap when he is allowed to return to "terra firma," humor that is emphasized by his tendency to orate at inappropriate times, by his use of frilly, formal language and his incomprehension of modern conveniences. We also have the privilege of being witness to the deep bond of friendship he has with Nathaniel Hawthorne and how their lives influenced one another's for the good. We cannot help but start to like the guy and feel a deep empathy for him as we realize he was often so pitifully trapped by his circumstances. A string of unbelievable adventures occur when Franklin Pierce tries to assert himself into the twenty-first century with the help and support of his soulmate, Sally Weare. He takes her to a ball in the 19th Century to meet his friends. They must outsmart terrorists on a train to Washington. They take part in a Wagon Train re-enactment with nail-biting consequences. They go on a quest for the bones of Peking Man. Their last adventure is the most unbelievable and heart-warming of all. Franklin always cognizant of his need to travel incognito is wary of the consequences for all if he is found out. What Kind of Man... is very much a different kind of ghost story.

This book caused me to review my history but most of all it was entertaining. It held my attention and was written with much creativity. I was always trying to guess what would happen next. Alot of detail was put into the historical elements of this. I would be interested in reading more books by this author. If one tries to imagine how this story would play out, if real, it seems very likely it would be like this. It is good that one can see all sides of Franklin Pierce and not just the "bad" president role. This book is written so that it makes you feel it is real and that it is a possibility. It is a cleverly written book of romance, intrigue and sci-fi. The characters come to life.

What Kind of Man... is a twisty-turny, IMPOSSIBLE tale that comes to life right before our eyes. Based on a very improbable paranormal romance, it is filled with action, adventure, mystery, intrigue, passion, romance and enough historical characters to, yes, shake a stick at. It is at times irreverant and this reader was pleasantly surprised by the humor, some of it very subtle. The more you know about the man, Franklin Pierce, the more you will understand and enjoy the humor. I found it helpful to Google/Bing the images of the major players, their homes, their works while reading. In fact I was so fascinated by these people I had to know more about them and their lives. Thankfully, photography, though in its infancy at the time, had come far enough along to give us some excellent images. The only way I can describe this book is to say "imagine combining The World According to Garp with Ragtime (different characters and settings, of course). It is a wonderful, spoofy read that I hope you will enjoy as much as I have.
