Hampton writes for the sake of the reader, not just for the sake of the poetry. Humorous, touching, with the flavor of outrageousness is how I would describe it. His poems are well-rooted in reality, with their branches pointing to the surreal. You don't have to be one of those hoity-toity poetry types to enjoy his verse, neither.
