What Manner of Man
What Manner of Man follows Jamal, a thirty-year-old Army veteran who has been out for three years. His hair is gone, his waistline is bigger, and every day he tries to be a good husband and a good man. But life after the Army is not what he thought it would be. The rank is gone. The routine is gone. And people want him to be someone he's not sure he knows how to be. Therapy seems like a good idea but turns out to be more than he bargained for. One quick line from his therapist pushes him to ask questions he never thought he needed to ask. He learns about pride, anger, family, and what manhood really means for him. This book does not promise a big lesson at the end. It is Jamal's open look at himself. He wants to breathe. He wants to stay afloat. He wants to figure out how to build something better for himself, piece by piece. Through stories about love, pain, and trying to be enough, Jamal writes the way he lives: honest, plain, and without pretending to be anything more than a man doing his best.
