Overview

Reed Wilder journeyed to Far Enough, Texas, in search of a fallen woman. Instead he found an angel. Barely reaching five-foot two inches, the petite firebrand helped defend him against two ruffians and then treated his wounds with a gentleness that made him long to uncover all of her secrets. But she had only to reveal her name and he knew his lovely rescuer was not an innocent woman, but the deceitful opportunist who had preyed on his brother.

Reed prided himself on his logic ...

Reed prided himself on his logic and control, but both deserted him when he gazed into Lucy's warm and beautiful eyes. He had only one option: to discover the truth behind those enticing lips he longed to sample. For how could the tainted woman he sought be the rose-scented angel he'd discovered? And soon, holding Lucy in his arms, he knew he'd come far enough to realize true love when he found it, far enough to know... What MATTERS Most.

...What Matters Most snatched my attention from the first few pages... Beautifully choreographed scenes, naturally flowing conversations, and real people presented in realistic situations all combine to keep the pages turning. A debut novel rarely comes together as perfectly as What Matters Most. I was, therefore, not surprised that it took top honors in the TARA 'First Impressions' contest, while also taking the Silver Quill award in Wisconsin's RWA 'Fabulous Five' competition. The story is well written, absorbing and, oh, so heartwarming. I think this is a great start for an exceptional writer.

What Matters Most is an interesting study of small town values and the effects of gossip on the innocent. In her debut novel, Winnie Griggs has captured a small town's tendency to gossip, judge and offer a hand of friendship. Her plot is emotionally complex and holds the reader's attention with the surprising twists that affirms the heroine's true character.

What Matters Most by Winnie Griggs
Reed Wilder is heading for Far Enough, Texas. Leaving his usual habit of having his head stuck in the ledgers back home in Delaware. He was finally going to make his father proud of him. He would find the fallen woman who stole the Dragon's Heart ring from his brother's widow and also bring home Jon's son to his father. He hated this Lucy Ames who was was a thief. Cheating Iris, Jon's widow of both the ring and her husbands faithfulness. On the way he is attacked by two men but rescued by a pint size sprite. While recovering at this Athena's home, Reed finds out that this angel who saved him...is the devil he had come to confront.

Lucy Ames and her son Toby lived quietly outside of town. With her mother's death only a few weeks ago and the town shunning her, they were alone. Oh there was her childhood friend, Lowell Crowder who wanted to marry her just to make her acceptable again but she wanted true love, like what her parents wanted. Getting to know Reed while he recovered at her home almost had her forgetting her tarnished reputation.

When the truth comes to light, can forgiveness come with it? Reed's pride does not allow him to truly see the person Lucy is and Lucy's pride will not settle for anything less than love and trust.

This seems to be Winnie's first book, written in 2001. And her excellent stories have continued. I'm looking forward to reading more of her books. She brought out the emotions of the characters and of the reader...I went through a few tissues myself. The anger at the town and how quickly they judged Lucy. And the truth of how often we see someone as we think we know them to be instead of really getting to know who they are.

A Must Read for Romance Lovers

For anyone who loves romance this book is a MUST READ. The story revolves around Lucy, a young woman with a small boy living alone, just outside a small town in Texas during the 1890s. Like all good romance books this lead female character has a strong personality with a few secrets in her past. Her neighbors aren't exactly friendly to her since she isn't married, and they don't think she ever has been. She meets and recues the hero of this book, Reed, during a dangerous encounter. Reed is also of strong moral character and has a few secrets he's harboring as well. From there, the story unfolds, revealing two lovable characters who develop a bonding relationship. This book has all of the elements that we romance readers love - lots of dialog, comedy, touching scenes, intimate moments, a little danger, a story that keeps us guessing and a suprise & happy ending to-die-for! If you like sweet romances with intimate scenes but not a lot of graphic detail - YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK! This is Ms Griggs first book. She has another coming out in November. I CAN'T WAIT TILL IT HITS THE BOOKSTORES!!!

I really loved this book and highly recommend!

This book gets a whopping big 5 star rating from me. Loved it. Am really glad to find a new author who paints such vivid pictures with her words. Ms. Griggs is very talented. Dialogue is wonderful. And in my opinion it is a real plus to NOT have really graphic descriptions of sex scenes. This author has class! But does her story suffer because she leaves out explicit details in the 2 main characters intimacies? No way. She really keeps this story moving. A real page turner! It was difficult to put the book down before finishing it!
