Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
You have the ring of your dreams, you walked down the aisle in a cloud of bliss, you were given a complete set of china, including the gravy boat, from your gift registry. Now what? This book provides the inside story of what it is like to be a newlywed. Author Marg Stark, recently married herself, shares the stories of 50 newly married women and relates their funny tales about the good and bad sides of married life.
Library Journal
Stark (Timeless Healing) has written a readable self-help guide for brides-to-be and newlyweds who are trying to adjust to this often anxiety-ridden passage in life and to solve the consequent identity crisis. Chapters touch on wedding postpartum, handling money squabbles, falling prey to stereotypes, timing pregnancies, and communication and criticism in a marriage. The text is interspersed with comments from the 50 (mostly white, middle-class) women whom Stark surveyed and interviewed. The result is a "feel good" book whose aim is to reassure newlyweds that their fears and anxieties are normal. Much of it reads like a woman's magazine article, offering somewhat simplistic advice: "breathe deeply, and believe that your venture into love will succeed." But Stark does have a clear, readable style and a reassuring sincerity in drawing from her own life as well as others. A bibliography of about 14 books (mostly other self-help books) follows the text. -- Ann Babits Grice, East Brunswick Public Library, New Jersey

    CHANGED MY LIFE

Reading this book changed my life. I was so unsure about marriage - trying to figure out if the guy I was with "was the one". Everyone says "you just know". I think the 54% divorce rate begs to differ. You might "know" a lot of things, but you don't know you are going to be happy with this one guy for the next 40 years of your life. I was beside myself with anxiousness. What this book did was help chill me out and realize what marriage was and what it could be, without candy coating it. It helped me realize I could be married if I wanted to. That no marriage is perfect but that does not mean you won't be happy. It was just what the doctor ordered for me. After reading this book, I was confident to make the decision to enter into marriage, and seven years later, we are as happy as can be, and I am so grateful to the author for helping me.

    Thankful I read this book

If you are just starting out in marriage, I strongly recommend this book. It is amazing! The author shares genuine personal stories to help you understand your own journey with marriage. I was feeling quite blue, but this book has provided hope and helped me understand the beginning stages of marriage so that I too can work towards an incredible marriage. My guess is you will be captivated by the author's candor and wisdom. I plan on buying it for all my recently married friends.

    May have saved my marriage!!

I was feeling very lost and scared when I found this book. I used to feel like something was wrong with me because I didn't feel like a 'newleywed'. Like my marriage was failing because we argued about money, didn't have sex like 'newleyweds' should, etc. I figured that I had gotten married at the wrong time or to the wrong guy. This book has helped me to relax and realize that my feelings are NORMAL. Being a 'newleywed' is a fairy tale. I have to grow into being a wife, especially since I spent 10 years out on my own. I love my husband and I love my marriage, now we are learning how to deal with money, life, stepkids, etc by figuring out how it works best for us - thanks to this book.

    The Reality of Marriage

I read this book about six months after I was married at the age of 20. It made me realize that my feelings towards my husband and my life in general are normal. I will give this book to any friend who gets married in the future!

    self-indulgent

While the author has a few good points, there are too many pages of self-indulgent stories to read through. A more conscise, less biographical account would have been a good read.

    Two thumbs up!

Being engaged right now and in the midst of planning I was looking for some insight into the whirl wind of changes and craziness I'm experiencing. Looking forward to the big day, I still feel a little lost! Not only goes the Author get right into the heart of engaged to married life, but she tells a bride to be to give herself some leverage and time. It's okay to have doubts and feel uneasy during this time. With some no-nonsense advice from her and the other brides she interviews I realize that I am still me, even if I am becoming someone's wife. This relaly should be a must read!! I'll pass it on to any engaged girlfriends I have!

A book for any new bride to be

I found this book while purchasing my invitations for my wedding - I thought it would be amusing, which it was! But I also learned a lot about things my mother would never talk to me about. I laughed and took in so much, I bought the book for my maid of honor who was engaged two weeks before my wedding. I have told everyone newly engaged couple about it. My copy is by my bed and I have reread chapters since my blissful day back in June. Thanks Marg!

    Keeps you feeling sane!

I am not a big 'self-help' reader, but a recently married friend loaned me this book. I read it cover to cover and had many 'Aha' and 'me, too' feelings. It discusses the problems and issues that modern women face when learning to become a partner after being single. It made me realize how normal all my feelings and conversations with my fiance were. I highly recommend this for any intellegent , career women who are in a serious relationship.

Should be Required reading for Brides-to-Be and Newlyweds!

No other book gives you a more realistic perspective of how walking down that changes your life. People de-emphasize how transformative and how public marriage really is. Even the man at the grocery store will have an opinion about what type of wife you are - some Ramen Noodles in your cart? Oh, you must be a Betty Crocker wife, right? Wedding planners don't tell you about the identity crisis. No one else will tell you that you're not really marrying one man - you're marrying into his whole family. What you envision the perfect, idealistic marriage...but what you get is never that limited or boring. This book helped me survive the ups & downs of becoming a bride. Not only will this prepare you intellectually for the truth, but you'll feel better knowing that you aren't losing your mind - you're losing your life as you once knew it...and you're gaining a whole new married life. You thought being single was a crazy way to live? Just wait.

    A Definite Read

I read the book shortly BEFORE I got engaged and now that I am experiencing some of the hoopla and melee involved in planning a wedding and preparing for a marriage, its comforting to know that I am not alone.

    An absolute must-read!!!

I have 4 months to go before my wedding and have just started reading this book. I almost started to cry when I read the first chapter because I felt so relieved. It helps you to understand that a variety of emotions while engaged/newly married is absolutely NORMAL and it happens to EVERYONE!

    I Loved this Book!

Since becoming engaged, I have read many books on the subject and this book by far has been the most helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed Stark's writing style, her humor shines as she shares intimate details of her own marriage, and the marriages of the women she interviewed. I appreciated the honesty and realism that the book provided, I found this book to be very comforting.
