Overview

Warning: turbulence on cloud nine! What No One Tells the Bride is the inside scoop on what it's really like getting married and being newly married. Recently married journalist Marg Stark breaks the newlywed code of silence and discusses the profound changes brides often experience, in everything from their self-image to their wardrobe. Stark and 50 married women tell their stories, reveal marital truths, and offer great and wise advice. Being a bride is a subject practically embalmed in mystique. But underneath the blushing exterior of bridehood are some difficult truths. The most important truth to absorb is that conflict, disappointment, and doubt is normal. Often an impending wedding can cause anxiety or second thoughts. Forging a couplehood is a tough and complicated task, and your differences need to be addressed: money, family, use of time, parental roles, and many others. The worst thing you can do is pretend everything is just fine and dandy, obeying the taboo against admitting you're worried. The bride who accepts reality is in much better long-term shape. Ms. Stark's constant encouragement is a gift, a testament to the pains and pleasures of working it out and living through it all. The issues that cause identity crisis, anxiety, anger, regret, competition, confusion and power struggles are explored and attended to one by one. It's like having your best friend tell you all the things she and 50 other women have learned through the complicated process of entering into married life. It also includes a list of ideas that makes it abundantly clear that brides and grooms are working cleverly and secretly at their sex lives. Marg Stark's helpful and humorous hints will help a new bride or a soon-to-be bride build a reality-based, romantic, communicative, and fun marriage. Humorous, compassionate, and full of advice from marriage counselors, ministers, financial advisors, and sex therapists, What No One Tells the Bride is not only a practical guide for every newly married woman, it also makes the perfect wedding shower gift.

    Thankful I read this book

If you are just starting out in marriage, I strongly recommend this book. It is amazing! The author shares genuine personal stories to help you understand your own journey with marriage. I was feeling quite blue, but this book has provided hope and helped me understand the beginning stages of marriage so that I too can work towards an incredible marriage. My guess is you will be captivated by the author's candor and wisdom. I plan on buying it for all my recently married friends.

    The Reality of Marriage

I read this book about six months after I was married at the age of 20. It made me realize that my feelings towards my husband and my life in general are normal. I will give this book to any friend who gets married in the future!

    self-indulgent

While the author has a few good points, there are too many pages of self-indulgent stories to read through. A more conscise, less biographical account would have been a good read.

    Keeps you feeling sane!

I am not a big 'self-help' reader, but a recently married friend loaned me this book. I read it cover to cover and had many 'Aha' and 'me, too' feelings. It discusses the problems and issues that modern women face when learning to become a partner after being single. It made me realize how normal all my feelings and conversations with my fiance were. I highly recommend this for any intellegent , career women who are in a serious relationship.

Should be Required reading for Brides-to-Be and Newlyweds!

No other book gives you a more realistic perspective of how walking down that changes your life. People de-emphasize how transformative and how public marriage really is. Even the man at the grocery store will have an opinion about what type of wife you are - some Ramen Noodles in your cart? Oh, you must be a Betty Crocker wife, right? Wedding planners don't tell you about the identity crisis. No one else will tell you that you're not really marrying one man - you're marrying into his whole family. What you envision the perfect, idealistic marriage...but what you get is never that limited or boring. This book helped me survive the ups & downs of becoming a bride. Not only will this prepare you intellectually for the truth, but you'll feel better knowing that you aren't losing your mind - you're losing your life as you once knew it...and you're gaining a whole new married life. You thought being single was a crazy way to live? Just wait.
