I'm an avid romantic suspense fan. I'm also a fan of the traditional Gothic romance. You know...the old Victoria Holt books. I could never get enough of those.
Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across this gem! WHAT SHE DOESN'T KNOW brought back all the elements I love in a romance. Cold, damp, danger. LOL yes, I like the weather to be challenging in romances. I consider it another facet of suspense.
Congratulations on a wonderful book, Ms. Gardiner. I'm so glad to have found this.

This is the worst edited book I've ever read. There are punctuation and grammatical errors throughout the book, which are very distracting. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

"What She Doesn't Know" by Lina Gardiner was a good suspense, mystery and even some romance read. This is really a action pack novel. It definitely kept me reading to see what was going to happen next.
"What She Doesn't Know" was of that was full of plots twists, secret societies and passageways. With the heroine (Raven Delacoeur Gale) having had amnesia, a librarian, a very annoying person at times, and a hero ... (Sloan Brockway) who has been in love with Raven for many years....taking her into danger that would find the hidden treasure (the artifact) that was needed to be found....... Sloan wanted Raven to have all the facts about her parents.. ..being a member of the protectorate(a secret organization).. What were they protecting? Why were they being chased by the (Jason Brimm's men... (some greedy thugs) and what did they want? Why did they want Raven dead or did they want her dead? What would happen when she found out that Sloan was related to her dead husband? What connection to all of this was about her parents and her uncle Phil? Now to answer these questions and many ... you will have to pick up this good read to find out the answers and much more.
This novel was very fascinating and the characters really helped make this an interesting and a few likable ones like ..Raven, Sloan, Johnson Carver, Uncle Phil to unlikable ones....Barry, Victor(Davey O'Riley), Mike, Preston and there are a few more I probably have left out.
"What She Doesn't Know" was indeed a well absorbing read and I would recommend this one a good read.

What She Doesn’t Know is a romantic suspense novel, that takes place primarily on an isolated island of the Bay of Fundy. Gardiner known for her paranormal romances delivers a suspenseful tale, filled with a secret society and a group of greedy thugs who want to uncover treasure. I quickly became engrossed in the tale and its characters. The protagonist Raven Gale is determined to put the past behind her, but when it appears that someone is using her dead husband’s identity she investigates. A little over a year ago, her deceased husband tried to kill her, and a part of her is somehow afraid he is still alive. She learns the person using his identity is on an island in the Bay of Fundy. She hires a guide to take her there. What she finds is a man who looks very similar to her husband, but before she can get some answers, she finds herself tied up, chased and running for her life. In order to survive, she will need to put her faith in Sloan (the man impersonating her dead husband). Raven soon learns that her parent’s death and everything she thought she knew about them is wrong. A group of men are after a treasure they believe her parents safeguarded and think Raven may have the answers. It’s a race against the clock as Raven and Sloan attempt to solve the mystery and stay alive. Gardiner’s tale was action packed with likable characters. Raven and Sloan were the main characters, and I liked the interaction between them. While Raven clearly cannot follow directions, she is quick on her feet and remains calm while questioning everything. I respected Sloan for not rushing into things, even though the physical attraction was intense between them almost from the onset. The fact that he was noble enough to realize it was more important that Raven have all the facts first, scored him major points. The romance, while it progressed slowly, was delightful. The tale that Gardiner weaves was fantastic, with secret societies and hidden treasure. It reminded me of the movie, National Treasure. Overall, the plot moved at a good pace, revealing key points along the way. This gave the tale, a genuine feel and added to the overall suspense. There were a few scenes where I question the plausibility of what occurred. For example, when someone is shot in Raven’s apartment, she and Sloan are able to leave the scene and go to the hospital. While the author provides an explanation, it wasn’t realistic for me. The EMT’s witnessed them at the scene. The author also stated the police where held up with a traffic accident and couldn’t be on seen. For shots fired? Not likely..in Chicago? The next morning they return to that apartment and Raven showers. Wouldn’t this still be a crime scene? But do not be discouraged, this was my only issue and a small bump in a fantastic, action packed, suspense that kept me turning the pages to see it reach its climactic conclusion. I would enjoy meeting more members of this secret society and hope Gardiner decides to make a series from this novel. I want to thank the author for gifting me a copy of this book, in exchange for my unbiased review. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. I've been a fan of Lina Gardiner's paranormal novels for years, but this was my first taste of her romantic suspense. Now I want more! Loved the premise, loved the development of the relationship between Raven and Sloan, and I loved the layers of mystery to be unraveled. I was especially drawn in and snared by the setting, a foggy island in the frigid Bay of Fundy and the unique house there. It was like a character itself! A quick, absorbing read that will pull you in and keep you turning the pages. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

There is a whole history in this book that neither you nor the heroine knows and that makes this book so much fun to read. Raven is the heroine of this novel and she is looking for her dead husband who tried to kill her. Something just isn't right about his death and she can't hide out in her house any longer, so she decides to take action. That action leads her to Sloan, her husband's look-alike cousin, although she doesn't realize that they are related, and a mystery about her life that she doesn't remember.
And I don't know what else to say about this book without giving something away. Before the book even starts, you are given a poem (which is just gorgeous) that plays into the story line of the entire novel.
On an Island
In an Ocean
Lies a Castle
King and Queen
And Golden Princess
Behold their Realm
With Guarded Interest
Beyond the Sea
Beyond the Wall
A Name that Doesn't Suit
The Key Becomes
For those who Seek
The Answer to its own
I just love it and I really enjoyed the entire story! There is great suspense here and the basis for a gorgeous romance. There are several mysteries here. First, the questions about what happened to Raven's parents? Is her husband really dead? Why doesn't she remember a huge chunk of her life including Sloan? How does the Protectorate and the treasures they protect come into it all? Who's the mysterious stranger on the island? What is Raven not remembering? It's all really very good!
If there is one complaint that I have about this book, it's that the author didn't compound on the romantic story line and sexual tension more. All the elements were there and what is there was really good...I just wanted more. More in the way of sexual tension and more in the way of the HEA. I am thinking that this may be the beginning of an ongoing series with these two characters though. If that's the case, then I completely agree with how much the author put in this one. The door is definitely there for Sloan & Raven to create a partnership going after the American Protectorate and if that's the case, I can't wait until the next book!

I've been a fan of Lina Gardiner's writing for years and have been waiting for her next book. What She Doesn't Know was well worth the wait. Once I started reading this book I didn't want to stop. I thought I knew what was going to happen, but I didn't come close. Gardiner built in so many plot twists I finally gave up trying to second-guess her and sat back and enjoyed the ride. We have a heroine who has amnesia, a hero who's been in love with the heroine for years, but must lead her into a danger to discover the hidden treasure he's pledged to find. There's family secrets, a mystical isle in the Bay of Fundy, modern day pirates and the lure of the Knights Templar legend. But most of all Gardiner gives us a touching love story of two people falling in love for a second time. A wonderful, riveting story. Definitely a 5 star! Was this review helpful?
