Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Christine Cassello
Kendra had told her friend that she would go to the movies with her on Saturday when another friend called and invited her to go to the circus. She really wanted to go but she did not want to hurt her other friend's feelings by cancelling their plans. She wondered how she could decide what to do. John Burstein, also known as Slim Goodbody, explains the decision making process and the kinds of decision making we face daily, most small, but some which will have a major impact on our lives and possibly on those around us as well. He gives an illustration of the brain and tells how one half controls emotions and the other controls our ability to use facts and how they are not always in agreement. He then gives skills to assist in making good decisions on matters of importance. The first is to take a deep breath, relax, and think about the facts, how you feel, what you imagine the outcome of your decisions might be, and whether or not you really have a choice to make. Skill two is gathering the facts, understanding your feelings, and examining your "gut feelings." Skill three is deciding whether you have to take an action immediately or if it can wait till later, and what dangers there may be in making a bad decision. Skill four is to have a goal; Skill Five is to decide on your options. Skill six is to consider the consequences and after all that is done, Skill seven is to take action. The final skill is to review your decision and the results. The more we practice these skills, the easier they become and the faster we will make decisions. The book is part of "Slim Goodbody's Life Skills 101" series. The photographs show real children of diverse sexes, races and abilities. A glossary inthe back of the book explains words that may be new to the reader and there is a list of books and web sites to get further information. Reviewer: Christine Cassello
